GRADUATION The family of Ray Townsend is pleased to announce his graduation from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston. Ray has been enrolled in the Officer's Training Program in Canada's only military college for the past four years. His program has included academic, military and athletic components. Ray has eamed an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He has assumed a variety of positions of leadership and responsibility within his squadron and the col- lege. He had thetonour of participating in the ceremony of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa in June 2000. Ray has been a member of intramural and varsity teams including hockey, broomball and rugby in which he received recognition as lop scor- er, most sportsmanlike player and players' player. Ray has worked hard during his years at the college. Al the Commissioning Parade on May 19, Ray was awarded the Victor van der Smissen-Rkfout Memorial Award for -the most deserving all-round ROTP cadet morally, intel- lectually and physically, who graduates at the Royal Military College of Canada.' The recipi- ent of this award is determined by secret bal- lot of alt cadets in the college. This prestigious award was a well-deserved surprise for Ray and as he fell out of rank to receive his award, he was suitably recognized by cadets on parade and family and friends around the parade square. Also at the Commissioning Parade, Ray was chosen by hi! graduating class to read the Commissioning Scroll on behalf of them. This scroll is the official wording used when someone accepts a commission as an officer in Canada's Armed Forces. Ray then received his commission from General Ray Townsend Maurice Baril, Chief of Defence Staff for Canada. Ray is presently a 2nd Lieutenant and will be a Captain upon comple- tion o1 Phase 2 of Flight Training. Ray is currently stationed at CFB Bagotvltle kt Quebec. In September, he wilt attend Laval University In Quebec City where he will continue studies while awaiting Phase 2 of Flight Tralnlrg. He is hoping eventually to be assigned tri Search and Rescue (Helicopter). Ray Is a graduate of Arthur District High School and St. John School and was kwofved in Arthur and area minor hockey and lacrosse, 4-H, St. John Church, and Etre MohewM lacrosse. During high school, Ray participated in team sports and clubs, was Student Council President and Ontario Scholar. He worked part - erne at Sussman's.
