Reminiscing
• with Johnston
part of reunion
From Pogo 1
"I'm telling everyone to
bring a lawn chair and to
come and sit under the trees
with me to remember the old
days. I hope it's a nice sunny
day so we can relax and chat
and enjoy ourselves," says
Johnston.
He says many of his
former students are still
friends, who fill his house
when they visit the area. As
well, many of his current
students are now children of
former students.
"The trick is to get out of
the business before I start
teaching the grandchildren,"
he laughs.
While Johnston has been
head of SDHS's phys. ed.
department since 1976, he
remembers highlights .of his
coaching years as the first
time Seaforth beat a
Stratford team in boys'
basketball in the late 70s,
Driver charged

A 24 -year-old Hensall
man has been charged
with driving while
suspended, driving
without insurance and
driving with an expired
licence plate.
He was stopped in
Seaforth on June 6 at 2
a.m. on Huron Street for
a traffic violation when
the officer discovered the
offences.
OPP report this is the
third time he was
charged for driving with
a suspended licence.

leading to the winning of

championships in the late
70s and early 80s.
During the 1980s, both the
boys' and girls' teams won
WOSSA (Western Ontario)
championships in basketball,
the boys winning seven and
the girls winning five or six.
"The 1980s were a very
strong time for us for
basketball. But, that was
before St. Mike's opened up
in Stratford," he says, adding
that SDHS's sports programs
have been eroded by the loss
of athletes to the Catholic
system.
"You can't afford to lose
anybody if you have a school
of 300 students and a lot of
the younger siblings of some
of our best athletes ended up
going elsewhere. It's
understandable but
frustrating," he says.
Johnston adds that one of
his regrets is that he was
never able to coach some of
'the children of his early
students because those
children are now attending
Catholic schools.
As well as coaching close
to 100 teams, Johnston has
also taught parenting, history
and math.
"I've really enjoying e -
mailing people to invite them
and there are a lot of people
I'm really excited about
seeing. My retirement was a
really good excuse to get
everyone together," he says.
Council
•
to sign
contract
for OPP
policing
By Scott HNy.ndor}f

After learning more about
proposed changes to how
OPP policing can be
purchased, Huron East
council is preparing to enter
its $959,000 contract with
the OPP as originally
planned.
Administrator Jack
McLachlan said there is a
private members bill in the
Ontario Legislature right
now that, if approved, would
see municipalities able to
purchase two levels of
policing in one contract: a
higher level in urban areas
and a lesser level in rural
areas.
Council had to enter a
contract for a higher level of
service across Huron East,
including the rural areas, in
order to be sure the urban
Seaforth Ward would not
lose its more visible police
presence.
"At this point, we have no
assurance it will go
through," said McLachlan of
the proposed bill.
Meanwhile, the contract
documentation arrived last
week and was expected at
last night's council meeting
for signing.
Mayor Lin Steffler said if
the hill does pass, they could
still negotiate a new contract
at the end of the first
contract year.
The contract is being
back -dated to April 1 which
Steffler said will save the
municipality money because
they will not be billed for
the extra officers that were
Deeded in town during the
arson investigations taking
place since April 15.
Sterner is not hopeful the
private members bill will
pass, giving Huron East a
chance to save on policing
costs next year.
However, she told council
now that the idea has been
brought before the
legislature, it's possible it
could be reintroduced in a
more formal fashion than a
private members bill
sometime in the future.
