HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2001-05-30, Page 2222 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, May 30, 2001 Sports Special effort to be made this year to recruit members Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club opened for the summer season on Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club May 21 with lawn bowling at 2 p.m. followed by a pot luck supper at 5:30 p.m. for more than 30 members and associates. President Neil Beuerman welcomed all present and gave a special welcome to Rishma Kassam, a co-op student from Guelph University who is presently working at the Seaforth Creamery in production development. While she is in Seaforth she is residing at Isabelle Hunt's. Thank you cards had been received by the club for the memorial donations the club had given in memory of Katie Phillips and Art Finlayson, two former long-time members of the club. Neil also expressed that a special effort is being put forth this year to recruit new members for the club and try to interest 'new people to the game of lawn bowls. An Open House is being held on Wednesday, June 6 and June 13 at 7:30 p.m. for beginners. We hope people will take advantage of these evenings and members will be present to answer questions about the game and also assist in trying out the game of lawn bowls. Following supper on opening day, euchre was played in the club house and winners were: white cards, high, Robert McMillan; lone hands, Lloyd Eisler; Consolation - Rishma Kassam; yellow cards, high, Robert Argyle; lone hands, Isabelle Hunt; consolation, Mary McClure. Hosting for the evening were Jack and Marie Muir. The next social will be June 26 with supper at 6 p.m. and cards and bowling after. Hostesses will be Bea Stoll and Mary Finlayson. Bowling at the Thistle Club in London on May 24, the fours entry of Fred and Betty Tilley and Erich and Joyce Matzold won the consolation prize. At Clinton Bankers Tournament Saturday, Jack and Marie Muir won second place. The tournament had to be called at the end of 1 1/2 games due to rain. Our sympathy goes out to members of the Habkirk family in the loss of May Habkirk, another former member for many years of the Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club. Coach's Comments: Very unfriendly match. Control of play even between two clubs. Ingersoll scores on free kick with 5 minutes remaining to earn the draw. London and Area Women's Soccer League Second Division May 27 St. Columban 'A' 0 at Chatham 4 Coaches comment: Quick and aggressive Chatham club dominates local team. May 20 St. Columban 'A' 2 at London United 1 St. Columban goals: Julianne Crowley, Sarah Szabo Coaches comments: Szabo scores with 5 minutes remaining to give locals first win of season. Strong team play paves way'to victory. Third Division May 27 St. Columban 'B' 2 at Taxardria 1 St. Columban goals: Faye Murray, Jessica Finlayson. Coaches comments: Locals overcome early deficit to defeat team from Arkona. St. Columban controls play for most part. Jessica Finlayson scores with 5 minutes left to give team third straight victory. May 21 Wallacetown at St. Columban 'B' Wallacetown fails to show up for game. St. Columban wins by forfeit.
