"We've gut the phones and fax machine all hooked up, there are examining tables and receptionists all here. These things can be major expenses for new doctors setting up but everything's here, plus a good client base," says clinic manager Mary Fisher. Fisher says the recent need for a clinic policy on not accepting new patients have renewed the focus on recruitment of new doctors. "We have a recruiter who's been working really hard at finding new doctors for Seaforth," she says. The policy, which came into effect last week, says the clinic is unable to accept new patients for routine, elective care except special under circumstances. It adds that anyone is welcome to come to the walk-in clinic from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays on a first come, first served basis and patients at emergency will still be seen by local doctors, with any follow-up being done at the clinic. "People with a medical emergency will always be assessed either here at the clinic or at the hospital regardless," says the policy. Fisher says staff at the clinic is hoping the closed practices will be a short- term decision. "It was a regrettable decision and we didn't come to it lightly. The doctors take a lot of pride in serving the community and want to keep doing the hest job they can," she says. Despite the recent need to stop accepting new patients, Fisher says she believes the doctors are taking care of most of the community. "Only one or two people have been calling occasionally asking for a doctor and we have to tell. them they're not accepting anyone new at this time," she says. SAVE! mij Councillors worried wards aren't getting right attention By Scott Hilgendorff Expositor Editor The resignation of a former Brussels employee, now a road superintendent within Huron East, became a sore spot for Brussels Ward councillors at a recent Huron East committee meeting. They were upset the hiring was done in-house, rather than advertised so that any potential Brussels employees could apply, keeping Brussels representation on staff. The employee leaving was someone who lived in the area and could operate pumps needed to increase water pressure if there was a fire in Brussels. Seili said Brussels was promised the same level of service it was used to if it joined Huron East. "We're going down, down, down and I'm going to blow up about this," said Seili, getting angry. He said since joining Huron East, the municipality has gone from having two full- time employees to a part time employee to having no one in Brussels. Mayor Lin Steffler said services may not be being handled the same way as they were before but that levels of service are being maintained across Huron East. Seili said the "rumour mill" is telling him the service isn't the same and that the employee who quit was leaving because he thought ' when he was hired, he would be working in Brussels, not all across Huron East. He also said there is a problem with a pump running too hot and that he is taking complaints about it and accused Public Works Coordinator John Forrest of ' knowing about it but not doing anything. • He said former Brussels employees are telling him about the problem. Forrest, however, said he is: aware there is still a problem and that it had been looked after, adding employees have to make him aware of issues. McKillop Ward Counc.. Sharon McClure also said she is hearing concerns the former McKillop Township employee is not being seen enough in the ward. Steffler said if people are concemed about the operation of their wards, they need to bring the issues to council. "It's difficult to deal with problems when they are being discussed in coffee shops and. on the streets," said Steffler. She also said the boundaries in Huron East are, larger now and jobs within the former municipalities are not' the same anymore. Anonymous tips can be made From Page 1 the idea to the public works department. Fisher said he won't know the BIA's commitment to the reward fund until after a June 4 meeting. Police believe someone knows who is setting the fires and Huron OPP's Crimestoppers officer Kevin Hummel has been active in the community, speaking at schools. While the reward is being offered by the community, tips will still be made to Crimestoppers which offers a separate reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals committing crimes. Crimestoppers docs not subscribe to call display and tips are made anonymously. "Please help us on this one," said Steffler. Crimestoppers can be reached at 1-800-222-8477.
