HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2001-05-30, Page 19THE HURON EXPOSITOR, May 30, 2001-19 Sports Athletes from Seaforth, Brussels 'pack a punch' at OFSSA track meet What has six legs, six arms and three heads, can run, jump and throw heavy objects over long distances? This year's Central Huron Secondary School track and field team, made up of two girls from Seaforth and one from Brussels. The team, while rather small, packed a punch at the OFSAA Qualifying meet held on May 16-17 under threatening skies at the new TD Waterhouse stadium in London. Midget Alina Shepherd, a Grade 9 student, ran in the 1500 m and the 3000 m races. She placed third in the 1500 m with a time of 5:15. Alina led the field to win the 3000 m race with a time of 11:09, after leading the field for the seven and a half laps. Grade 11 student Jamie Lewis, a junior, competed in the 100 m sprint, the 200 m dash and the running long jump. With a personal best time of 12.6 seconds, Jamie placed second in the 100 m. By winning her heat in the 200 m. Jamie made it to the final where she placed second with a time of 26.2 seconds. Jamie also placed second in the long jump with a personal best of 5.06 m. Ka,te Johnston, in her fourth year at Central Huron Secondary School, competed in the junior girls' discus and shot put. Working her way steadily up the ranks, Kate capped off with a throw of 34.16 m, a new personal best, to win second place. Kate's throw of 9.62 m in the shot put circle placed her in fourth position, Ifut due to a scratch by another competitor, she qualified in third place. All three members of the track team advanced to the OFSAA regionals at Sarnia St. Pats on May 25-26. Despite the rain and cold, the team was optimistic about qualifying for OFSAA which will he held in Etobicoke on the May 31, Houseleague soccer league begins tonight at Optimist Park Seaforth Minor Houseleague Soccer will begin tonight at the Optimist Park. Once again there will he three age groups, Junior - ages 3- 4, Intermediate - ages 5 -7 and Senior - ages 8 and up. Juniors will play from 6:30 - 7, intermediates from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. and senior from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. All children registered for minor soccer should have been notified by phone already, but if you have not been, look in today's paper for team lists. If you have not registered and would like to, there is still room. Drop into the community centres to register. Shuffleboard No shuffleboard will be held at the Seaforth and District Community Centres on Wednesday, June 6, as the hall has been previously hooked. Shuffleboard will resume June 13. Swimming Lessons The Seaforth Lions Pool will be hosting swimming lesson registration on Saturday, June 2 from 10 -1 pm. at the Lions Park Pavilion. Programs available are parents and tots, preschool Aqua Quest levels 1, 2 and 3, Aqua Quest Levels I - 12, Aqua Adults, Aqua Fitness, swim team, and much more. Lesson dates are after school lessons from Recreation preview By Marty Bedard June 18 -29, sesson one from July 2 - 13, sesson two from July 16 - 27 and sesson three from Aug. 6 - 17. No phone registrations will be accepted. Tennis Lessons The Huron East recreation department will once again be offering tennis lessons for youth and adults. Early Bird lessons will he every Wednesday evening beginning May 30 from 7 -8:30 p.m. Adults 16 and up will have five lessons for $25. Youth beginner will he held on Thursdays from 9 - 10:30 a.m. and youth advanced will go from 10:30 - noon also on Thursdays. Registration fee • will be $40 for 10 weeks and the lessons begin on June 28. Adult lessons will be held on Wednesdays beginning July 4. Beginners will go from 6:30 - 8 p.m. and advanced will go from 8 - 9:30 p.m. Registration fee for the 10 weeks of lessons will be $50. Registration or information can be obtained by calling the Huron East Recreation Office at 527-1272. Correspondents Information day to be held at Brussels Legion, June 3 Last Friday evening members of the Branch and Auxiliary went to Seaforth Legion News Brussels Branch 218 for a joint installation of officers of both Branches and Auxiliaries. Lunch was served by Brussels. Any officer of Branch 156 or the Auxiliary who were unable to attend at Brussels please be sure to attend the June General Meeting of the Branch or Auxiliary respectively. Randy Groundwater, Provincial Service Officer will be at Seaforth Legion on June 8 DeJong at 522-0474. The Annual Duck Race was held last Saturday. There will be an information day held at Brussels Branch 218 on Sunday, June 3 at 1 p.m. All incoming officers are encouraged to attend this event and anyone interested is welcome to attend. The August 23 trip to Eric Beach, Port Dover, Sophie Ticker trip needs more people and Oktoberfest, Dublin Walter Ostaneck Concert also needs more riders.
