Budget New legislation could drop policing costs' as council hopes to delay signing contract By Scott Hilgsndorff Expositor Editor Huron East council is hoping to delay entry into a $959,000 contract for OPP policing until it knows what kind of impact amendments to the Police Services Act might have. "I'm going to choose to look at this as good news," said Mayor Lin Steffler at council's May 22 meeting. Council has spent months trying to determine what level of policing was best needed for both the rural and urban parts of Huron East while hoping to avoid a huge impact on taxpayers. They decided on a $959,000 contract that would see an enhanced level of service in all of Huron East. Steffler told council changes to the Police Services Act could allow them to have drive-by policing in rural parts of the municipality and dedicated officers assigned to the urban areas with hopes of saving money on the contract. This could be good news as council tries to find ways to cut back on a potential $200,000 tax increase as it prepares its first budget for Huron East. Council has not signed the contract for policing yet and Tuckersmith Coun. Bill DeJong said they should find out what the implications of the police act changes would be. "before we commit ourselves with a contract with the OPP.- A letter is being sent to the OPP's contract policing division to let them know they wish to hold off signing until they have more information on the pending changes. Steffler expected council could know of the impact to pending changes in the act within a couple weeks. The budget is expected to he finalized around mid June. Tuckersmith accused of entering Huron East with work that should already have been done By Scott Hilgendorff Expositor Editor So far, Huron East council has cut $20,000 from a possible $200,000 tax increase as it tries to find ways to soften the blow of anticipated tax hikes, particularly in Grey Ward, in the newly amalgamated municipality's first budget. The cut came when Tuckersmith Ward councillors admitted some work budgeted for the Vanastra Recreation Complex should have been done before the amalgamation. "I think it's odd so much went wrong with that rec centre right after amalgamation. You had a big reserve," said McKillop Ward councillor Sharon McClure. The facility's pool needs a new filtration system, major repairs are needed to the roof and furnace work are included in the needs for the CMHA members Dr. Robert Shephard, John Robertson (3rd from left) and Randal Hulley present plans to Seaforth Lions Club Past President Marlen Vincent (2nd left). CMHA has purchased 92 Goderich,Street in Seaforth for offices. Any interested people can attend the meeting Wednesday, May 30th 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Home & Hearth Bed & Breakfast 86 Goderich St., Seaforth Canadian Mental Health Association Huron Perth Branch 1-888-875-2944 Ext. 240 X facility. "It looks like nothing was spent on it," said McClure. Deputy Mayor Bernie MacLellan of Tuckersmith said the filtration system probably should have been done three years ago and suggested taking that out of the budget and drawing on the ward's reserves instead. Each of the five former municipalities are maintaining their own reserves for projects within the wards. "There are things in the budget that likely should have been repaired before amalgamation," said Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath. But he said some work was done before the restructuring took place including repairs to the facility's boiler. Brussels Coun. Greg Wilson said he was not concerned about all the wards sharing the cost of repairs in Vanastra as long as all the wards would share in the future cost of upgrading fire equipment in different wards. "We have a 1954 pumper still in service. It qualifies for antique shows too." he said as an example of future equipment needs. Time To Cut Hay?
