Council
trades
rent
for dishes
By Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
Huron East, in support of
a decision by the Vanastra
Recreation Committee, is
accepting dishes from the
Vanastra Lions Club in
place of the $245 rent for a
New Year's event.
The Lions Club sent a
letter to council
complaining that its
members had to clean-up,
lock-up and provide security
for their New Year's event
while other people have
used the facility and
received staff support.
"Over the past 25 years,
the Vanastra Lions Club has
donated thousands of dollar
toward equipment, programs
and upkeep of the Vanastra
Rec Centre. It is in the
opinion of our board of
directors that we set up a
committee to review the
policies of your rental
program and possibly arrive
at a solution that is
favourable to all," said
Lions Club president, Barb
Hodgins in a letter to
council, read at its May 15
meeting.
A letter was then received
by council from the
Vanastra Recreation
Committee, offering a 60 -
place setting of dishes, a
roller cabinet and two carts
for loading and moving
tables in place of the rental.
"The hall isn't rented out
much. I don't know if we
want the responsibility for
dishes," said Tuckersmith
Ward Coun..Larry McGrath,
adding he wasn't opposed to
them being kept at the
centre but thought the Lions
Club should continue to be
responsible for them in case
dishes went missing or were
broke.
Tuckersmith Ward Coun.
Bill DeJonge said if they did
accept them, the dishes
would be there if someone
did want to Serve a meal.
Facilities manager
Graham Nesbitt said the
facility is not set up for
banquet -type meals with
only two household stoves
and a household dishwasher
in the kitchen.
He said it would be hard
to serve 100 people in the
facility.
However, Deputy Mayor
Bernie MacLellan had
pointed out the Lions Club
is the main user of the
facility and suggested they
might forgive the group the
cost of the rental.
He suggested the Lions
Club probably does more
cleaning in the facility than
staff because of how often
they use it.
But Graham explained
that some groups who use
the facilities, including the
Seaforth and District
Community Centres, do
more clean up and
preparation than others but
everyone is billed the same.
Grey Ward Coun. Alvin
McLellan said, service, clubs
in Grey often do clean up
and extra work even though
staff is supposed to handle
it, as part of their
contribution to the
community.
"You walk a very fine
line," he said, mirroring
similar comments from
DeJong that it's hard to
suspend rental for one group
and not another who might
also be willing to do clean
up in exchange for waiving
the rent.
McLellan said if they did
it for one group, they would
have to do it for all of them.
Nesbitt said he would take
the matter to the Vanastra
Recreation Committee.
Despite comments from
Deputy Mayor MacLellan's
about the difference levels
of usage between the
facilities in Huron East,
Nesbitt said, "We will have
one policy not three."
Council passed a motion
to accept the offer of dishes.
