How far from the ceiling should the curtains or valance be hung? We're thinking about adding sheers and a valance with cellular shades for privacy at night, but I'm not convinced this is the best solution. What can you suggest? A: Those huge picture windows must add a great deal to the low ceiling rooms. Lower ceilings can be a bit of a problem. You want to do everything you can to make sure you do not feel claustrophobic because the ceilings are not as high as they could be. I like your idea of the sheers the Lawn Master Landscape Construction and Maintenance 519-527-1750 RR 2 Seaforth • Interlocking pavestone patios, walkways, driveways • Full landscaping design & installation • Seeding, sodding, lawn repair •Trees, shrubs, perennials, grass seed Paul VanderMolen "Award Winning Landscape & Walkway Design" with the shades very much. This will allow you some privacy, but it's important to not put anything too bulky on the windows, which would draw that ceiling down ever further. The cellular shades will add privacy, light control and insulation qualities as well. This could make a big difference in the overall comfort of your room. The sheer you speak of should work out great. This will continue that light. airy feel you already have and not cause anyone's eye to be drawn to the tops of the windows pulling the ceiling down even farther. As for the height of hanging valances. leave as much wall space as you can. Actually. I recommend no valance at all. Hang your sheers. and it you want a more finished look. swag a sheer scarf on the rod. If you opt for a sweeping downward effect. it will give more of an illusion of height. Adjust the scarf until you get the desired look. Also. make sure the colour of your ceiling isn't making your situation worse. If your ceiling is not painted white. run out immediately and get some white paint. Nothing adds to the height of ceilings like painting them white. especially if the walls are another color.
