Spring Scramble brings
golfers home to Seaforth
During the 70s in an effort
to promote the sport of golf,
The National Golf
Foundation coined the
phrase, "Golf the Game for a
Lifetime."
In recent weeks I have
come to appreciate just how
accurate that phrase is.
On May 5, the annual
Spring Member Guest
Scramble was held with 132
golfers taking part in a fun
format that raises money
every year for the local
chapter of the Food Bank.
The ages of the
participants vary but the
majority of the golfers taking
part are in their mid-30s and
early 40s. Many of the guys
played golf here as juniors
and it's nice to see these
former "ankle -biters" return
each year from London,
Toronto, Kitchener and the
local area to take part in this
event.
Many of them have busy
lives with little children of
their own, hectic careers, and
homes in areas where rounds
of golf take up half the
weekend, so they don't get a
chance to play •much.
Fortunately they put in a lot
of rounds here when they
were kids and have a good
golf foundation.
Chris Marion, Tim Sills
and Luke McMillan won the
scramble in a playoff after
shooting 10 under par.
The next tournament we're
planning is our annual Senior
Invitational scheduled for
May 23. The event is nearly
full and it's so much fun to
receive the entries for this
event as many of them come
with little notes attached -
some funny - some sad.
The minimum age for the
senior event is 50 and we
have golfers aged up to 87
spry years taking part.
One of the entries came
from Tony Matlock who said
By Carolanne Doig
he would be in Italy until just
before the event and he
would ask the Pope for good
weather for us, thinking the
Pope would comply because
both are Polish.
There are 80 -somethings
who don't need power carts
and prefer to walk the 18
hole event while there are
other "younger" seniors with
bad knees or hips, who rely
on the power cart to make
their appearance in such an
event possible.
Many come as a foursome
with a span of three or four
decades among the members
of the group, all enjoying the
camaraderie associated with
golf. Some of the guys don't
see each other that often
during the rest of the year
and use the Seaforth event as
the "same time next year"
chance to get together once
again.
One of the saddest notes
this year came from Ev
Richardson from Indian Hills
Golf Club. In the section
marked "playing partner
request" Ev wrote, "Put me
with anyone as my partner's
gone."
Tears came to my eyes as I
read this note because Ev
played golf, with our member,
Harold Turnbull every year
for more than 30 years in
either the Men's Invitational
or the Senior Invitational and
sadly Harold passed away
during the winter. •
Each year, there are a few
more seniors who can't make
the trek to Seaforth because
of ailing health or worse, yet
each year the tournament
welcomes others who have
reached the age of 50 and
move from the mid -amateur
ranks to the senior age group.
One of our former
members, Ron knight, who
passed away a few years ago
on May 3 has a bench in his
memory on our 6th tee which
was his favourite place on
the golf course. Each May 3,
Ron's wife Ann comes to the
course to spend some time on
the bench remembering Ron
and the good times they
enjoyed on the golf course.
Senior morning had its
opener on Monday with
about 30 seniors out to enjoy
the nice morning. Seniors is
every Monday at 10 a.m. and
you don't have to be a
member to enjoy the fun.
On Tuesday night Fer-Pal
Construction sponsored
Men's Night and it was Chris
Marion's night. Along with a
hole in one on #I3 "Pipes"
won the putting prize with
only 10 putts, one of the
skins (along with Mike
Marion and Cam Doig), and
was on the winning team of
the High/Low competition
along with Neil Baker, Fred
Leitch and John Blanchard.
Chris had another hole in one
during the week.
Ladies Night was
sponsored by Millingtons.
Least putts was won by
Olave Little.
Our opening Couples
Night, sponsored by the
Albion Hotel, saw 12 couples
brave the cool, damp night.
Remember that Monday is
a holiday and that Seniors
will play on Tuesday
morning at 10.
See you on the course.
