News Cuddle bears bring comfort to Alzheimer patients By Scott Hilgendoeff Expositor Editor Unique 'cuddle bears' are being adopted by residents in Seaforth Manor. In fact, one of the hand madebears, a source of comfort to people with dementia illnesses like Alzheimer disease, was adopted minutes after being introduced to residents at the nursing home facility. "They have'someone to care for in the bear," said Alex Beasse of the Alzheimer Society, who brought the bears to the residents last week. She said the bears can help decrease a person's sense of isolation, provide tactile stimulation and can spark fond memories from their past, periods where Alzheimer patients memories are focussed as they lose memory of the present. As the bears were being passed around for residents to see, Doris Smith took to one immediately and adopted it on the spot, naming him Peter. "That's why we do this," said Beasse of Smith's immediate joy in having a bear. Scott Hilgendorff photo Doris Smith, Pat Ryan and Alex Beasse (Huron County Alzheimer Society) enjoy the 'cuddle bears' recently presented to residents of Seaforth Manor. "For someone like Doris, she's a person who really connects with the bear," said Beasse. "They're comforting," said Cheryl Phillips, activity director at the facility. She was excited to be able to have the bears at the Manor. Volunteers hand-knit the bears which are given to people with dementia as gifts. They stay with the residents, not the long-term care facility where they might be staying. While the program has been in place for about five years in Huron County, it's the first time bears have come to Seaforth Manor and residents were glad to see them. Each one is different and can be in traditional colours or brightly coloured yarns. Beasse said the Alzheimer Society has seen some patients' self-esteem improve through use of the bears. She said some take to them so strongly that they treat the bears with care and compassion. FRIB - 148..3474M Administrator Jack McLachlan, sparking concerns from several councillors at council's April 3 meeting. The bylaw would restrict the number of units a livestock operation can have to 300 while Tuckersmith's bylaw restricts to 250. For pigs, one unit is equal to four animals. Tuckersmith's bylaw would expire in September and the new bylaw would be set to expire at the same time for McKillop and Grey Wards. McLachlan said the bylaw is being set up differently in response to advice from Huron County's planning department that Tuckersmith's bylaw is best left on the books, as is. While council traditionally gives new bylaws a first, second and final approval in one meeting, McLachlan suggested they only give it the first two to give residents a chance to respond. "I'm uncomfortable we have different regulations for different wards," said Deputy Mayor Bernie MacLellan Grey Ward Coun. Graeme MacDonald and Tuckersmith Ward Coun. Bill DeJong also expressed concern about having two different bylaws. "I think we should follow the Tuckersmith numbers," said DeJong. "I don't like the double standard either," said MacDonald. Brussels Ward Coun. Joe Seili asked if the situation would create a flood of applications for building permits approval prior to the bylaw being passed. "That's the chance we take," said McLachlan. He also told council by the time the bylaw expires, the situation could be completely different because an Ashfield Township bylaw is going through the courts and the Ontario Municipal Board for a hearing that could impact what powers the municipalities have in regulating large livestock operations. McLachlan told The Expositor, by the time the bylaw expires, it is hoped upper levels of government will have come up with standards for livestock operations. The bylaws are being put in place to put a moratorium on the size of livestock operations until sizes can be determined that are considered safe for the environment because of the amount of manure produced by the facilities which potentially contaminates water supplies. Council discussed the numbers being used in the bylaw to limit the size of livestock facilities and MacLellan pointed out. "It was an effort not to penalize the small farms."
