In 1932, Jack Lane's
family, friends and
neighbours used to gather
around the radio - the first
and only radio in the area
at the time - to listen to
every Toronto Maple Leafs
game.
"What I remember most
is a bunch of neighbours in
our kitchen listening to the
game. It was a battery-
operated radio which used
to fade in and out but still
it brought the game a lot
closer to you. And, hockey
was one of the most
important reasons we got
that radio," he says.
That love of hockey was
also the reason Lane's

While Jack and
his brother played
minor hockey as
kids, he says they
were in the
minority at the
time and Vincent created
the tournament so'that all
boys (and during the past
10 years or so girls) could
play hockey, no matter
what their skill level.
"It was one of my
father's greatest wishes
that every boy should have
the opportunity to play,"
says Jack.
"Very few got into town
to play in those days and
this tournament could be
the only time these kids
put on hockey equipment
all year. Some couldn't
skate very well and didn't
know which, direction to
skate," he says.
He says the opposite is
true now, with many of the
players involved in minor
hockey but adds there are
still players who never get
a chance to play hockey
otherwise.
"But, now out of the
total team, there's
probably only two who'
aren't involved in minor
hockey," he says.
The tournament, which
is open to Catholic
students from Grades 3 to
8, started out involving 24
teams from schools in
Seaforth, Dublin, St.
Columban, Zurich and
Mount Carmel.
