Rural job fair planned for May r6
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Staff
Huron East council agreed
at its Feb. 20 meeting to
cover the cost of rental
facilities for this year's rural
job fair, the first of which
was held in Seaforth last
year.
This year's job fair, called
Target Youth 2001, is being
planned to be held in both the
Seaforth Agriplex and in both
sides of the Seaforth and
District Community Centres,
Mayor Lin Steffler told
council.
"Some people wanted it to
be held in Stratford this year
but (Huron East's Business
Retention and Expansion
Committee chair) Gwen
Devereaux pointed out, quite
correctly, that Seaforth is the
centre of Huron and Perth,"
Steffler said.
The job fair is planned
tentatively for May 16,

Vanastra
Church
wants to
buy park
Huron East council is
entering negotiations with
the Vanastra Community
Christian Reformed Church
about the possibility of the
church buying some of
Vanastra's parkland so that it
can expand.
"Tuckersmith council met
with them last October on
site. They would like to put
an addition on their church,"
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan told council at
its Feb. 20 meeting.
McLachlan said the
community has four other
parks and will retain
parkland to the south of the
parcel the church hopes to
buy. He added that the
church will keep as many
trees as possible on the site.
"They haven't got a price
yet and they still need to get
provincial approval," said
McLachlan.

Police investigating flats
on Murphy's school bus
Police are looking for
whoever placed nails under
the tires of a Murphy's Bus
Lines bus, causing two flats
\ on Feb. 27 when the bus was
parked at Seaforth Public
School.

questioned some students
over the incident but police

Mailboxes being destroyed
McKillop Ward
mailboxes arc being
destroyed along with
mailboxes in Usborne and
Goderich Townships, reports
the Huron OPP.
Police are receiving many
calls from rural residents
that their mailboxes are
being ripped off and
destroyed. A Goderich
Township woman said a
convoy pf vehicles stopped
by. her mailbox, which was
then destroyed by a group of
young people` scattering
mail all over the road.
Program (HELP) said in a
phone interview after the
meeting.
Stover said Huron East's
donation of the cost of rental
facilities is one of the first of
many local donations needed
to hold the job fair this year.
"Last year we had a single
funder - the Rural Youth Job
Strategies - but they only
fund initiatives once. So,
we're going to try to do it
with more participation from
the community this time,"
she said.
Stover said that local
employers, government
agencies and corporations
will be approached for
donations to raise the
$40,000 necessary to run the
day -long job fair.
"People said they loved it
last year. Well, let's see how
much they loved it - $40,000
is really a small amount if
you think about what it does
for the community," said
Stover.
While 80 exhibitors from
Huron, Perth and London
were involved in last year's
job fair, Stover said this
year's goal is to involve 110
exhibitors to attract both high
school students and
university and college
students.
"We think there will be a
bigger response this year.
We're really excited," she
said, adding that employers
throughout Southwestern
Ontario will be welcome to
exhibit.
While Olympic gold medal
swimmer Mark Tewksbury
was very% popular as the
keynote speaker last year,
Stover said she hopes to
attract someone just as
famous this year.
Stover said the HELP
board debated moving the job
fair back and forth between
Huron and Perth Counties
each year but decided that
Seaforth is a central location
for both counties.
Steffler said at the council
meeting that it's hoped that
the job fair will be held in
Huron East on an annual
basis.
Grey ward Coun. Graeme
MacDonald said he is
supportive of the job fair and
Seaforth ward Coun. Dick
Burgess said he was "quite
impressed" with last year's
job fair.
"It was a great learning
experience for the high
school students and I was
quite impressed by the
quality of the presentations.
If we can get Perth persuaded
that this is the place to hold
it, that would be great," said
Burgess.
