Organizers of a new
Seaforth basketball program
hope it will help make up for
the absence of high school
sports this year.
"They've got to keep
active and do something,"
said Recreation and Facilities
Manager Graham Nesbitt.
Teachers have spent this
year working to rule in
protest of provincial changes
that included a loss of
preparatory time.
Nesbitt was originally
looking at offering the
program for elementary
school -aged children and
hopes to have it on an annual
basis if this year is
successful.
However, he said without
high school sports, organizers
wanted to include a league
for high school students as
well, at least for this year.
"The kids have to have
something other than just
school," Nesbitt said.
Coaching the program will
be local basketball
enthusiasts, Ron Vercruyssen,
Paul Menary and Brian
Dillon.

Ron Vercruyssen coaches high school age students Monday night, the first evening of a new
basketball program being offered by Huron East's recreation department in Seaforth.
Vercruyssen brings to the league in Stratford. building and scrimmages and

on participants' experience
and skill levels, to set up a
fun league.
The program is open to
anyone, although. there is a
registration fee, and no one
will be cut from any teams.
Nesbitt said this is the first
step toward putting together
some new programs and
activities in the newly
amalgamated Huron East.

Menary played college

and Dillon are experienced

"They're a good crew."
He said registration is
going well for the program.
Although the first night for

Junior farmers holding Young Farmers Forum
Huron County is hosting,
for the first time, the Young
Farmers Forum.
The Huron County Junior
Farmers are joining with the
Seaforth Agricultural Society
and the Federations of
Agriculture in Huron and
surrounding counties, to host
the Young Farmers Forum
2001 at the Seaforth Agri-
Plex on Friday, March 2,
2001.
The event is•being held
this year on a Friday night
and will be followed by one
of the always -popular Junior
Farmers dances.
The decision to have the
event on a Friday night was
made so it wouldn't conflict
with other events, or with
off -farm jobs and other
responsibilities that young
farmers have which make it
difficult to attend Saturday
events.
"Friday night makes it
seem more like a social event
as well as an educational
one," said Becky Campbell,
an organizer and Past
President of the Huron
County Junior Farmers.
The social hour and
registration begins at 6:30
p.m. and the seminar portion
of the evening -takes place
from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Event speakers include
Paul Jewell, a Clarica
representative, who will talk
on Keeping the Farm in the
Family, a discussion of
family farm succession.
Questions he will address
include:
• When it comes time to
take over the farm, what is
your financial strategy?
• Do you know the legal
issues?
• What's left for parents
and other siblings?
The other speaker will be
Gabriele Del Bianco, a
psychologist and president of
Innerfit, who will talk about
stress management and
motivational tips.
There will also be a panel
of young area farmers who
will share their personal
experiences about what has,
or hasn't, worked in their
own operations.
There is a fee for the
seminar but the seminar
admission will be refunded
Ditch damages to be billed
Land owners who damage the ditches or
road allowances along their property will be
billed for the damages if they don't repair
them, Huron East council decided at its Feb.
20 meeting.
Public Works Coordinator John Forrest
told council the letter it approved that will be
sent to property owners with damaged road
allowances is increasingly necessary with the
use of huge farm machinery that easily
travels through ditches.
"It's becoming evident more all the time.
We're having a lot of problems with the
bigger machines. Nothing stops them and
they go onto the fields anywhere. They're
tearing up the ditches and we're trying to put
a stop to that," he said.
Brussels Ward Coun. Joe Seili said the
letter will also be useful to send to farmers
who plant into the road allowance.
"Some grow corn right to the corner and
you can't see traffic. There are some really
bad areas around like that and this will at
least give us the right to do something about
that," said Seiki.
