Huron Expositor, 2001-01-31, Page 7News Imo MOON QDOSITOA, January y 31, 3001-7 Dublin Lions build outdoor rink, first of its kind in village By Chris Colbourn@ Mitchel Advocate With the popularity of hockey, ringette and good of fashioned skating, ice time in West Perth is a hot commodity. But thanks to the dedicated work of some Dublin Lions, Club members (and a few non- members), and combined with the wintry elements this year, there's a new outdoor rink for the public to enjoy. The rink, which measures about 36 -feet wide and 96 -feet in length, is located behind the Lion's pavilion in Dublin. Lion Dale Cronin said this is the first year the Lions Club has built .a public rink and having a good old fashioned Canadian winter has helped make the project a success. "We hit it lucky," he said. "When you see them out there skating it makes it worthwhile." Cronin and fellow Lion John Looby said the rink is usually open from the morning to about 9:30 p.m. Chris Colbourne photo Local youth from Dublin and area don't waste any time in lacing up their skates to try out the new ice rink located behind the Lions Club Pavillion. Pictured here James Looby, 5, left and Kaden Cronin, 5, play a little one-on-one hockey Saturday morning. when a new flood of water is applied. Cronin also pointed out the location of the rink is convenient because a creek that runs nearby provides ample water for floods. Cronin said that during the flood time until the rink opens, there are signs asking the public to refrain from using the ice surface until it is completely ready. The whole idea for the rink came from discussions among members of the club who wanted a community project, said Correspondents Gardening club plants bulbs to prepare for spring During January, residents enjoyed slowing down after the busy Seaforth Manor Nursing Home Christmas season and kept busy indoors. We bid farewell to Rev. Doug Corriveau from Bethel Bible Church and wish him well in his new job. Our Baking Club made delicious carrot muffins which were enjoyed following an afternoon of excellent entertainment provided by Carol LeBeau and Bill Pepper. Our Gardening Club was busy planting tulip, daffodil and hyacinth bulbs to force for early spring blooming as well as several amaryllis bulbs which have already sprouted up. These gardening projects help us think ahead to spring. Piano music with Carol Carter and Bill Gibson kept everyone singing some favourite tunes. Our Robbie Burns Day event had everyone enjoying a traditional Scottish menu for the day as well as a very interesting travelogue of Scotland and some delicious Scottish snacks. Several of our residents attended the Alzheimer's walk-a-thon at the local high school. Congratulations to Pat Ryan and Isabelle Shortrecd for their fundraising efforts to support the Alzheimer's Society. Conducting our worship services for January were Rev. Doug Corriveau, Rev.
