Local members of the Maccabees
are greatly interested in a proposed
xaerger between ` that society and
the Ladies of The 1Viaeoabees whi .
will be • voted. on at The Mecca bees.,
international convention in Detroit,
Mich., January. 7.
The Ladies of The Maccabees ap-
proved the merger by
a two thirds
majority at a convention on Decem-
ber II, and if it carries in the other
society., the combination will result
in one of the strongest fraternal
benefitassociations in the iworld,,
with a membership of over 250,000;'
nearly 500- local dodges, assets in
excess of $29,000,000, and fully or-
ganized departments of 'men, women
and children. An affirmative vote
in The Maccabees convention' is
practically certain, according to A.
W. Frye, supreme commander, and
the merger will go into effect nine-
ty days after its approval by the
Michigan commissioner of insur-
ance.
While The Maccabees and the
Ladies of The Maccabees have hith-
erto had no official connection, they
haven been brothel, and sister soc-
ieties ever since the organization of
the latter in 1886, with mutual aims
and interests. In the opinion of
leaders in both societies, these can
be better carried out by operating
as one association instead of two,
with competition eliminated, re-
duced expense, and one society giv-
ing whole family protection instead
of the husband belonging to one and
the wife to another.
Under the Maccabees' plan of op-
eration, men and women members
are on an absolute equality but meet
in separate lodges, uniting only
when mutually desired for social
purposes. The L. , 0, T. M. local
branches will thus retain their full
indentity and their own ritual, and.
the ladies.will have full representa-
tion in the society's governing body
according to their membership.
