Hospital denied plow request, Huron East reviewing policies By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Staff Huron East's snow removal policy will be reviewed following a letter from Seaforth Community Hospital complaining about a denied request for a Seaforth plow clearing—Centennial-Drive at 10:55 p.m. on Dec. 11. Council, at its Jan. .9 meeting, discussed a letter from hospital vice-president Andrew William, about an incident when public works coordinator John Forrest was called about difficulty travelling on Centennial Drive at around 11 p.m. but responded that there would be no snow removal until at least 4 a.m. "Our policy is that we don't go out after 9 p.m. They never mentioned to me lhat they couldn't get in with a four- wheel drive truck," Forrest told council, adding that during the night in question Highway 8 had been closed. Forrest said Seaforth council created the 9 p.m. policy because of what he called "nuisance calls" from one particular OPP officer several years ago who would phone at 11 p.rn. complaining Check out these V SUPER BARGAINS! "This is the first complaint we've had in a long time. I don't think it's going to be a major problem," he said. "There are very few cars out that time of night and if we had gone, that (Centennial Drive) would have been the only street in Seaforth that would have been plowed." Coun. Larry McGrath, of Tuckersmith ward, questioned if the policy would cover the municipality's liability if an accident occurred during the time when town plows are not on the road, especially if the conditions had been brought to the town's attention. Coun. Joe Seili, of Brussels ward, expressed concem about the roads not being kept clear to the hospital. "I've heard this town fight to keep its hospital but you're not going to keep the roads open between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.?" he said. Forrest recalled how he drove the town plow in front of the ambulance to London last year. "It was the first time ever ANNOUNCEMENT THE PARTNERS OF FAMME & CO. He added that if he received a call that an ambulance couldn't get to the hospital or even if staff leaving their shift at the hospital were stuck in the snow, a plow would be dispatched immediately. "We're not going to put anyone in jeopardy but we have to draw a line somewhere. It's not a decision I like to make but I have to make it," he said after the meeting. Forrest said it was too early in the amalgamation process to know the snow removal policies of the four municipalities that joined Seaforth to create Huron East. "I don't think there's a problem with your policy and I'm not sure there needs to be a change but I'd like to feel more comfortable that you're going to•respond if there's a call from the hospital or the fire department," said Deputy - Mayor Bemie MacLellan. Council will send a lettter to the hospital saying the snow removal policy will be reviewed along with the rest of the policies being reviewed during the amalgamation process.
