Huron Expositor, 2001-01-10, Page 3Roof collapses in Hensall By Angela Pickering Lakeshore Advance Staff Two feet of heavy snow collapsed the flat roof of an empty King Street, Hensall, building last Friday evening. Huron O.P.P. were called to Hensall shortly after 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 5 when they found the former O'Connor Funeral Home building situated in the middle of the business area had collapsed due to heavy snow accumulation. The building, which had been empty for the last two years after a fire damaged the top section, toppled down with debris ending up on the roadway. The top floor of the building used to be occupied apartments before the fire wiped the whole floor out. There was never any reconstruction done on the building after the fire. Occupants in an attached building were evacuated until personnel could attend and determine if any structural damage had taken place. Hensall Fire Department assisted in the evacuation with traffic control and was greatly appreciated by the attending officers. Angela Pickering photo Snow forced the roof of an empty downtown Hensall buliding to collapse on Friday. Chief Building Inspector Milt Dietrich said the weight of the snow was just too much for the original design of the building. The owner of the structure was contacted and the Village of Hensall was notified so barriers could be put around the damaged areas to keep people back in case of further falling debris. On Monday afternoon a contractor was hired to clean up the debris at the O'Connor's expense. The task at hand, Dietrich says, will be to hire an engineer to tear down the entire building without, damaging the two attached buildings on either side of it. As of right now, he says there has been no damage done to the adjacant buildings. Mayor doesn't want Huron East to become a melting pot While building a strong municipality, she hopes Huron East can maintain identity of it. wards The identities of the five municipalities that have become Huron East will be protected, said newly elected mayor, Lin Steffler. Steffler and the rest of the 12 -member council and senior staff were sworn in at a special inaugural meeting Jan. 2 in the new Huron East council chambers at the former Seaforth Town Hall. While Steffler wants Huron East to become a leader in Huron County, she said she also doesn't want the new municipality to become a "melting pot" of the former five municipalities. She wants to build on the strengths that each bring to Huron East and referred to some including the fact that it now has the largest permanent population of all the new municipalities that formed after most of Huron County restructured this year. "We have a lot going for us," she said. Council is currently researching for certain whether or not Huron East produces more in agriculture than the province of Prince Edward Island. Following the swearing in, Rev. Nick Vendermey was asked to offer a few words to the new council but chose to present those in the form of a prayer of encouragement to the new council. From there, council faced only a light agenda including a resolution it passed supporting the formation of a time capsule which the former Seaforth council had begun filling last month. "The formalities are ended and the work begins," said Steffler. Council supported a resolution that would include items from the five municipalities (Seaforth, Brussels, McKillop Township, Grey Township and Tuckersmith Township) forming Huron East to help preserve their history. When ready, the capsule is to be placed in a vault, not to be opened again for 50 years. When opened, new items are to be added to it representing Huron East with instructions for it to be cealed again until the end of the century. Bylaws were passed appointing the senior staff to their positions in the municipality including: Jack McLachlan as clerk administrator, deputy treasurer; Brad Knight as finance manager -treasurer, deputy clerk; John Forrest as public works coordinator; Graham Nesbitt as recreation and facilities director; Paul Josling as building official - bylaw enforcement officer. A separate bylaw detailing how council operates from how to make a delegation to the length of meetings was given one reading and was expected to be passed at council's meeting last night. Huron East council will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings starting at 7 p.m. in the former Seaforth Town Hall. Hensall fire ruled arson by OPP OPP are investigating a suspected arson at a building in Hensall. OPP believe the Dec. 17 fire was deliberately set in a lower section of the building. It was discovered when an employee of a business that uses part of the former Agripress building arrived at about 7:45 a.m. to find smoke coming from the building. The Hensall fire department was called and was able to contain the fire into one isolated area. Hensall fire chief Ken Bruxer was not certain how much damage had been done to the building but said they arrived in time to isolate it before it could become a major fire.
