being offered to local people
who want to walk indoors for
health and exercise.
A local.walking'club is the
idea of Dianne Wood,
diabetes educator at Seaforth
Community Hospital, who is
trying to encourage her
clients to help decrease the
symptoms of diabetes by
getting more exercise.
When she suggested
walking as the cheapest,
easiest and most effective
type of exercise, she says she
was met with concerns about
the weather.
"People are afraid of
falling down on the ice and
the frosty air bothers those
with heart conditions or
respiratory problems., We
don't have a mall so the high
school's the 'only place I
could think of," she says.
Wood called the high
school and gained permission
for walkers to use the school
hallways every Tuesday and
Thursday evening from 7 -9
p.m.
SDHS principal Jeff
Reaburn says the school is
available for walkers during
the school year but not when
the school is closed during
holidays.
But, so far, no, one is
taking advantage of the
opportunity.
"There are so many
reasons to walk for people of
all ages, whatever state their
health is in," she says.
Wood says walking is A
stress reliever and mood
elevator, ' decreases
cholesterol levels, improves
circulation, lowers btood
sugar, gives extra energy and
when done outside, provides
the benefits of fresh air and
Vitamin D from sunshine.
She says walking three to
four times a week is
