Board recycles cabinets
from shut Vanastra school
By Stew Slater
Special to The -Huron Expositor
Five -year --old cabinetry from the
recently -closed. Vanastra. Community
School .is being recycled by the. Avon
Maitland District School Board, with
much of the material moving to a new
library and resource centre at Howick
Central Public School. -
"We believed we wouldn't have
gotten any more money for,(the sale of)
Vanastra with or without the millwork,
so we decided it would be best to keep
it and re -use it somewhere else,, 'said
Avon Maitland superintendent of
business Janet Baird -Jackson.
The Avon Maitland official couldn't
specify the value of the- recycled
material, which waspart of a
renovation at Vanastra five years ago.
But she says the recycling initiative will
save the board beyond the. obvious
elimination of the need for new
cabinetry: She also notes that skilled
tradespeople who build cabinets are,
often busy, and, the need for new
cabinetry can lead to delays in such
projects.
Baird -Jackson presented trustees .with
a tendering recommendation for the
Hawick project during a regular board
meeting Wednesday, Dec. 13. The
lowest bid for the addition. and
renovation to the R.R. I Gorrie-school
was valued at $283.015.'
• Work is expected to begin over the
Christmas holidays, and Baird=Jackson
notes that the board hopes to have as
much of the recycled material removed
from the former Vanastra school- before
the. real estate deal closes later this
month. A small amount of material has
already been -reconstructed in Brookside
Public School at R.R. 7 Lucknow, and
the rest is expected to be sufficient to
completely outfit the. hely resource
centre at Howick.
In a strange development. Baird -
Jackson didn't reveal the names of the
four contractors because board staff
had. so far, been unable to obtain
satisfactory reference checks on the.

A better balanced water
system is the result of one of
the final projects -:being .
completed by the Seaforth
PUC as. it dissolves_ in four
days to become part of
Festival Hydro in Stratford
on Jan. I.
A 10 -inch water main at
Sperling Stree now gives
three connections between
the town and the water tower
at the town?s eastend.
"It's part of our long-term
planning. It means abetter
flow," said Jim Sills of•the
PUC.
The .connection provides
three that cross the' railroad
tracks now and will help
ensure a good flow of water
if there is heavy usage in one'
part of town, that, in the past,
might have reduced flow to
another area.
Also. Sills said the change
wilI!now give the- town more
ways to isolate areas to work
on without cutting water off
to as many people when work
on the watersystem is
necessary, such as if a water
main was to burst.
Now, the sale of the PUC,
through provincial
deregulation of the electric
industry, and the town
assuming responsibility for
the water system, leaves
future projects up to Huron
.East council.
Sills hopes the new
municipality will continue
with PUC plans to drill a
third well for the community,
another part of the PUC?s
long-term planning.
"We're trying to leave a
dependable system for the
council and reassure it for the
future," said Sills.

The recommendation for trustees

wasn't possible. The next lowest hid

officials explained satisfactory.
references have already been obtained
forthat contractor.
Newly -elected Stratford trustee Rod
Brown wondered if the board shouldn't
disregard the low bid. since the
difficulty in securing satisfactory
reference checks might already point in
the direction of questionable quality.
When pressed,. Baird -Jackson
admitted two references for the
company had already been, received.
with one stating they would. "never use
the contractoragain. and -the other
stating the work was "okay." That was,.
the reason further checks were being
made, she said.
In the end. however. Brown
supported the motion.

along to the Huron East
council. Huron East council
assumes responsibility for the
town under an amalgamation
agreement with surrounding
municipalities that takes
effect Jan. 1.
The fire department raised
the issue more than two years
ago with concerns that Main
Street is the only road
crossing the railway tracks
that connects the town with

the fire department. The. tire
department feared a passing
train or accident at the
crossing would force the lire
department to travel' the five -
mile block on rural roads on
the outskirts of town' to get to
a fire on the other side of the
tracks..A partial derailment
did occur in the summer of
1998, blocking: half of Main
Street. prompting the fire
department to •.make an
