Former mayors reflect on town history
From Paige 1
the beginning," says
Johnston.
He recounted how
Seaforth was incorporated as
a town in 1867--with-400
acres and a population of
1,060 and then incorporated
as a town in 1876 with 550
acres and a population of
2.060. ,
Johnston also talked about
how after Seaforth's original
town hall was burned down,
the decision was made in
1$93 to build the current
three-storey structure at
'Main and Market Streets for
510.000.
"The people wanted
something they would be
proudof. You couldn't put
up much of a building now
for 510.000," he said, adding
that the current renovations,
which .include the
installation of an elevator,
will create a "nice building"
for Huron East.
Johnston listed other past
"accomplishments of the town
as the building of a new
water .tower, the 1995
home oming and 'the
5375,renovations to' the •
public library,. which were
completed during his term as
mayor.
Hildebrand gave best
wishes to the new council
and staff of Huron East.
"It's sad that it's the end'of
an era but I enjoyed my 14.•
years as mayor and felt •that
it was quite an honour to
represent the town," she
said.
Alf Ross, i who was
Seaforth's mayor from .1982
to 1988, -,said being.mayor
was "alt experience in a
lifetime."
He said the highlights .of
his term included building a
new community centre,. _

since the Seaforth PUC was
sold to the city of Stratford,
Ross said the town couldn't
-get a grant for it, even
though surrounding
municipalities were
receiving funding.
"So our building was
funded completely by
Seaforth tax dollars," he
said.
Ross said Seaforth is still
benefitting from its
