HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2000-12-20, Page 8•-TNI HURON EXPOIIITOII, D000ssilsoe B0, 21000 News Groundwater study looks into supply By Sarah Caldwell Goderich Signal -Star Staff Finding out about the quantity of water in the county's resources is the purpose of the Huron Groundwater study, Huron County senior planner Scott Tousaw told county council, Nov. 30. • "We have the same water as we did 100 years ago and it will serve us well for the future if. we look after it right," said Tousaw. The county groundwater study began in April 2000 with 85 per cent funding assistance from the Ministry of Environment's Groundwater Protection Fund. The study will assist in understanding the groundwater system in Huron County and will analyze the quality of water well aquifiers which provide fresh water to most of Huron's residents, agriculture and industry. The study will also establish a base -line information for future monitoring, and will pro%idc recommendations for protecting groundwater resources. The •study has three phases: 1) Groundwater Resource Assessment and Pilot Study 2) Main Study and 3) Sentinel program. Tousaw presented the first phase of the report to the county. The study • is being conducted by hydrogcologists Golder Associates with the assistance of BM Ross and Associates (water sampling) under the direction of a steering committee. The water well records maintained by MO the Ministry of the Environment identify over 5500 wells in Huron County of which 90 per cent. arc drilled wells and 10 per cent are dug, bored or other wells.
