Citizens worry
`band-aid repair'
is not
a long-term
solution
Doig said in an interview
following the meeting. "But
we've spoken to some people
who would have a good idea.
So we're not pulling (the
numbers) out of thin air,
.either." :
She said the Success
Foundation wants to see a

The final request of the •

Board since the closure issue
wound down last spring.
At the final regular meeting
of the current slate of trustees.
Tuesday. Nov. Z8. Seaforth
Student Success Foundation
representative Carolanne Doig.
spoke directly to outgoing
Seaforth-area representative
Abby Armstrong. urging het
to bring forward a motion
delaying possible maintenance
work on the high school's
gymnasium floor.
"We are concerned that the
board is prepared to spend
S60-70,.000. on aband-aid,
solution to the gym floor
problem. that will not be of
long-term benefit to the
students," Doig explained.
A small section of the floor,
'on which the board holds its
twice -monthly meetings. has
already been patched With

the group is worried that more
piecemeal repairs will be
carried out over the coming
Christmas holidays. meaning

complete overhaul which

as a : fully -functioning
secondary school
"We don't know about the
560-70.000 figure (for short-
term repairs) for sure. because
we don't have the numbers."
But Armstrong, who didn't
seek re-electionin the recent
municipal 'elections., refused.
saying she was "not prepared
to make any motion that
would tie the hands.of the
future. board on any matter."
Armstrong told Doig she
didn't believe any work would
be done in the coming weeks.
and that no,work would be
carried out until the board
receives information about the
state of the floor. By then. she
suggested. the --new slate- of
trustees would be in place.
Armstrong will be replaced
in her trusteeship by Seaforth
resident, Charles Smith. who
was one of the original
driving forces behind the
Student Success Foundation.

people to donate food or
funds to the food hank.
"There's certainly a'grcat

Ray Maloney of the food

He said demand for food
increases at Christmas time
but for right now. with
continued support • from
community groups. they keep
up with the need of area
families.
In November. 185 people
used the kraal food bank.
"lt seems like there is a
real need.- said Maloney.
All the area churches and
schools regularly contribute
to the food bank and the
agricultural society collects
food as admission. to its

•
Maloney said any extra
supplies, generated on
Saturday or through the
generosity of people during
•
the holidays will help ensure
a supply of food into the
winter. ,
"If we get a boost right
now, it helps in those down •
months in, January and
February." he said. -
In addition. to food
donations. Maloney said the
hank appreciates 'financial
contributions as well.
The food bank -s,pends -
about- S500 a month on
grocery •items not generated
by food donations in the
community that includes
purchasing hamburger that
cannot be donated.
The bank has also
purchased hams and turkeys
to be given out this week and
next to families for
Christmas.
Donations are also used to
purchase items that may have
run short on the food bank
shelves or to make bulk food
purchases to help the money
go further.
Mclady thought with
people in'the giving spirit
during the holidays. it was a
good time to bring some
attention to the food bank.
Hc has rounded up several
musicians who will provide
entertainment Saturday from
10 am. to noon and I p.m. to
3 p.m.including piano and
fiddle tunes.
"We've had tremendous
support from the
community," said Maloney.
encourased by Meladys'
efforts.
