Students record
Christmas CD
By Cod Stavros
Clinton News Record Staff
The Christmas album. A
hallmark in any recording
star's career that can
immortalize their voice. Elvis
Presley. Bing Crosby. Even
The Muppets.
Now, you can add the staff
and students of Huron
Centennial School (HCS)
outside Brucefield to that list.
Grade 2 teacher Bill Marsh
said the school has decided to
follow-up the Huron
Centennial Sings CD recorded.
two -and -a -half years ago,
with a Christmas album.
"Three years ago, 1 was at
a (friend's) Christmas party
and their little boy .was
playing a CD," Marsh said
when asked from where the
initial concept came. "He was
sitting there. just brimming
with pride telling everyone
'I'm on this CD'."
After further inquiry.
Marsh approached the
principal and staff of HCS
with the concept - it was well
received. Don Baker, •a
professional musician from
St. Thomas who owns a
recording studio as well. was
employed by the school to do
the recording.
The success of the first
album. Marsh said, helped the
staff decided to do the
Christmas album.
"It was a really positive
experience, the entire school,•
students and staff, wyrking
together on one prbject."
Marsh' said. "I think the
students feel great about it."
And according to two
Grade 6 HCS students. Marsh
is correct.
."It's really fun," said
Esther Armstrong. "We were
practicing (the songs) pnce a
week, and 'in the last two
weeks. we were practicing
ever day."
When asked what their
friends thought. both Colin
Henderson. also in Grade 6.
and Armstrong said everyone
liked it.
"They think it's pretty
cool," said Hendc'son.
Henderson and Armstrong
were both on the first CD as
well.
HCS staff started planning
.the CD in June. when a
meeting established the songs
that would appear on the
recording. .
"the Kindergarten class will
he singing Nuthin' for
Christmas, the Grade 2s will
be performing Mele
Kalikimaka, the Grade 4s and •
5s Vive le Vent," Marsh said,
adding 11 songs in total will
appear on the album. The
Grade 6s recorded Huron
Carol and Felice Navidad.
Each grade in the school
recorded two songs, with the
staff pitching in their own
rendition of When a Child is
Born.
In addition to the songs,
album producer Don Baker
has recorded special messages
from m the students.
"He has asked some of the
students what Christmas
means to them," explained
Marsh. "Those messages will
appear on the CD with
background instrumental
music. It is really great."
Marsh said the school
hopes to use the sales
generated by the album to
fund the arts and music
program at HCS.
A contest was held for the
cover design, with five judges
deciding which three creations
were best for the CD.
The CD launch party will
also be the school's Christmas
concert in December, where
HCS will bunle the
remaining copies ofthe first
CD with the new Christmas
album.
Five hundred copies of the
CD and 400 of the tape will
be ordered. For advance
purchase, cor(tact Bill Marsh
at HCS, 233-3130. Cost will
be $20 for CDs and $15 for
cassettes.
