Owen Sound will cover
county's paramedics
City's base hospital will provide
training, quality assurance
By Sarah Coaches.
Goderich Signal -Star Staff
Huron County has made
the decision to choose the
Owen Sound Base Hospital
program to cover
paramedics in the county
which means a training and
quality assurance officer
will be hired to be stationed
in the county.
Base hospital programs
were established by the
province to oversee quality
assurance for paramedics as
all paramedics perform their
pre -hospital care under the
license of a qualified
physician. These physicians
are typically the medical
directors of each base
hospital program.
The county was left with
the decision to pick one
service when it takes over
land ambulance
management on Jan. 1,
County
enters pilot
project
for its
ambulance
dispatching
By Sarah Caldwell
Goderich Signal -Star Staff
Huron County turned
down an invitation to join
the counties of Oxford,
Elgin, Middlesex and Perth
to undertake a pilot project
to take over the land
ambulance dispatch
function of the province.
The counties of Grey and
Bruce have also
recommended against
participation.
The London Central
Ambulance
Communication Centre
(CACC) currently
dispatches land ambulances
for the counties of Grey,
Bruce, Huron, Perth,
Oxford, Elgin and
Middlesex.
The province is fully
funding dispatch, however,
there is no guarantee that
would be the case were the
province is no longer the
service delivery agent.
There was a similar pilot
project suggested by
Ottawa -Carleton to take
over dispatch services.
As the county
understands it Ottawa -
Carleton temporarily
shelved consideration of a
pilot project pending
clarification of funding
models and successful
ambulance transition
scheduled for Jan. 1, 2001.
The province requires
unanimous consent from all
seven counties before they
will entertain the pilot
project.
Union
members

under
former deal

with members working under
conditions of the old deal
during the interim period.
However, increased
provincial regulations for
instructional time, combined
with the absence of a new
deal, has meant most
teachers have been unwilling
to supervise the same level of
extra -curricular activities as
they have in the past.
2001, as it is currently
served by the Owen Sound
Base Hospital program and
the Sarnia Base Hospital
program.
In addition to looking at
the two current program the
county's Administration.
Finance and Personnel
committee also reviewed a
proposal from the London
Base Hospital program.
At the county level
discussion was had with the
Huron Pcrth Hospital
Partnership to establish a
base hospital in the county.
The HPHP indicated they
did not have the time or
resources to establish such a
program.
Owen Sound Base
Hospital Program (Grey
Bruce Health Services) with
the addition of the rest
Huron County paramedics
will be eligible to move to
the next level of provincial
funding..
This additional funding
will allow them to station a
training and quality
assurance officer in the
County.
The partnership would
greatly enhance the
County's ability to enhance
to deliver a quality
professional paramedic and
ambulance program, says
the county.
County staff were
directed to discuss an
appropriate contract and
performance agreement
with the Grey Bruce Base
Hospital program.
Staff were also directed to
discuss the matter with the
province to ensure the
funding was provided.
Once these discussions
are finalized. the draft
agreements will he subject
to approval by committee
and county council. Once
there is an agreement
recommended for council's
consideration, a full
presentation will he made
by the Owen Sound Base
Hospital to council.

St. Patrick's holds its final celebration
of its centennial year
As the year 2000 comes to
an end, so does the Centennial
Year at St. Patrick's Parish,
Dublin. Fond memories of the
past year have given our
community many opportunities
to reflect upon.
In January we began our
centennial year with a Levee.
Historical displays and a
reception were the main
events. The feast of St.
Patrick's was celebrated in
March. A spiritual talk on our
patron saint and a parish social
was very well attended. The blessing of the
corner stone.in May gave the faithful the
chance to reflect on Christ our rock and
corner stone of our faith. This was
followed by a very successful home
coming weekend in July. Wasn't that a
party! In September, we celebrated
Cemetery Sunday and prayed for all the
faithful departed.
Our final event and by far not the least is
our memorial consecration. This event
recalls the fact that St. Patrick's Church
was consecrated on November 25, 1900. A
special mass of consecration was
celebrated on Nov. 19, 2000.
This celebration is significant
because simple mortar and Krick
are blessed and become the
house of God. It becomes a very
sacred place where the faithful
can worship God. What honors
and blessings have come upon
this community as we recall 100
years of faithful worship. They
are more than we can count.
As pastor, I want to say to the
faithful that I am honored to
have had this opportunity and 1
would like to say thank you to
all who have engaged in the celebrations. It
is the participation of each member of the
community that makes the events a
success.
As we celebrate Christ rising from the
dead and the promise of the Holy Spirit's
power, we continue to journey toward the
Father of all life. Let us remain faithful to
the promise that has been entrusted to us.
This is my prayer and the prayer of all the
faithful.
