"The only thing he did to anger us was tell us the truth." Political pundits are worried that, despite a strong campaign by Joe Clark, the Conservatives could be practically wiped off the map by the momentum behind the Canadian Alliance. Kelly, however, says people who are upset with the Liberal government, but don't want to vote Alliance, are planning to vote PC. "The only way the elections should be won is by telling the people what we stand for," he said. "If people agree, they'll give us the mandate." The only poll that counts, says Kelly, is the one on Nov. 27. Ken Kelly is 51. He, and his wife Lynda. have two sons, John and William. He is Co -Chair of the Grey Bruce Huron Perth Georgian Triangle Training Board. He has a diploma in agriculture, farm operations and management from the University of Guelph. News Ross grew up in a community -minded home chewing about them. We still have to be concerned about the school and the ambulance is a big problem. I hope there are enough new people on county council to make a difference." she says. One of Ross's nominators says she's "an all-round good person" while another says if you looked up the word humanitarian in the dictionary, you'd see Ross's face there. But, because Ross says she grew up in a home where her parents were involved in the community regularly, she says she's shocked to receive the award. "People say I'm so busy and maybe I am to their standards. Sometilnes I have to be selfish and stay home and do the lawn and housework. ,But„ getting involved isn't very hard. It doesn't have to he anything big. Just walk up to someone and say, 'Hi.' It isn't a job if' you feel like doing it." From Page 1 church fundraisers such as the Mother's and Father's Day breakfasts, the auction and barbecues. "Oh, that's just church work," she says of the work she's always been involved in, even before moving to Seaforth from Sarnia 12 years ago. While she got involved in canvassing during the annual campaign for the Canadian Cancer Society before her husband Murray was diagnosed and died of cancer, Ross says she got more involved after his death. For three years, she helped organized the drive for the whole Seaforth and Egmondville area, as well as the local mailing campaign. "It was a big job," she says, adding she's returned to "just canvassing?' As the chair of the seniors' committee at the Seaforth Legion, Ross organizes the Monday afternoon card parties for seniors, a job she says is "very rewarding." Getting involved meant countless hours for Smith, gathering documents, donating more than $1,000 to the legal fund, researching thc Education Act, preparing statements and attending and speaking at hoard meetings with a group of local citizens that worked together for months trying to convince the board from closing the school before launching their civil action. "If they hadn't begun when they did and remain vigilant, we wouldn't have been able to go to court," said Smith. But when it did go to court, Smith said the legal team was also a big part of thee' effort. "We had legal counsel that believed in our cause as much as we did," said Smith. During his efforts, Smith accumulated thousands of pieces of paper and thoroughly went through every piece of information he could collect relating to the closure of the school. In his research, he found a 5200,000 error in the board's calculations of how much would be saved by closing the school. "it's my nature to look into things in detail. It's my genetics and I'm trained as a mechanical engincer..By nature and training. that was a useful tool as we sat there buried in the board's paperwork," said Smith, who also said hc was not overwhelmed by working through the Education Act because through Boilersmith, he has to deal with many different government acts and regulations. Smith said his continued involvement in the fight to keep the school open comes from his value system. He said he is close to his sisters and nieces and nephews and sees the community as a bigger extension of his family. And he said if it wasn't for his family and some great employees, he wouldn't hhvc been able to get involved so heavily in the fight. His mother became ill shortly after he joined the struggle. He said some family travelled 600 miles to help him at home so he could afford the time to get to board meetings and court.' . Family has continued to help since his mother died earlier this year. At Boilersmith, he said there was staff in place who could ensure the business operated smoothly to also allow him to work on the closure issue. He said having family and grcat staff is what will allow him to he involved as a trustee on the board where hc now hopes to be able to be an influence on other trustees, convincing them of thc need to make changes in how the hoard operates to improve communication with the public. He also intends to remain diligent in the Struggle to keep thc high school open and advises everyone else who took part in the first struggles to do the same. Hc wants to continue looking at thc fairness of thc hoard. now from inside, to ensure everyone has a fair chance at having thcirconcerns and issues heard. Jansen encourages others. to get involved in minor sports From Pogo 1 • played some girls hockey and minor baseball. She loves to watch sports on television or attend gamcs which also lets her do more with her kids. "I love sports," she said. She also hopes her involvement will be an encouragement to her kids to do the same when they are old enough to take part in the community. "Hopefully, they will give back to the community too," she said who is encouraged that Trisha is already taking a recreation and leisure studies program at the University of Waterloo. "Lots of parents want their kids involved but they don't want • to run the organizations," she said. As an executive member, she hears complaints from people about how the system operates. Judy Jansen "Well, come out and get involved," she said. "The hardest part is the criticism we take when we're volunteers trying to help 240 kids in hockey," she said, adding, being on the executive gives you a voice and a chance to make changes. "These things don't run without volunteers." she said. "i do it because i want to do it. i didn't expect any reward. It's an honour but there's lots of people in the community that could he recognized," she said.
