The federal candidate for the Huron -Bruce riding became involved with the Reform party, the precursor to the Canadian Alliance, back in 1997, in direct response to Bill C-68, the gun legislation bill. "I joined because of Bill C-68...1 got politically active because of Bill C-68," he said, .adding that the Reform party took the strongest stance against that bill. From that starting point in politics. he said that the more he learned about politics and the more he learned about government, the more he became committed to working for change. His commitment to the ,party continued, and in 1998 he was there in London when the Canadian Alliance was first proposed. He .served as vice- president and president of the constituency association for the party and as the area coordinator, for a short time period. He was also. a member of the agriculture development committee for . Ontario for the party. Giving the short answer as to why, he chose to run for, the party in this election, Beaven said. "It was the right thing to do." 'For his longer answer, he noted that if people were to sit down at their kitchen table and talk about the things they would like to see from their government, the list might include more democracy, free votes, more tax dollars remaining in taxpayers pockets and tax dollars in the government's hands being more wisely spent, and a better health care and justice system. With' those thoughts in mind., he noted, "We have to ask ourselves what party is going to give us those things." Adding that the Liberal governmenthad, seven years in power, and the Progressive Conservatives also had their chance, the candidate stated, "I firmly believe the Canadian Alliance is the 'party that will give us those things that are talked about at the kitchen table." Beaven, who with his wife Tracy has lived on a small hobby farm, with their horses and dogs, for about three years. said that. things have been "fantastic" out' on the campaign trail. Noting that the best thing about being on the trail is the fact that he gets to meet thousands of people, he said he has visited all the area main streets at least once, along with doing some door-to-door visits, and a meet the candidates night. In talking 'with. the constituents from the Huron- Bruce area, 'the candidate said he has found, "People are looking for a change." People. he said, are not happy with the. present leadership they believe it is out of touch, they are looking for a change. and, "they like the message Stockwell (Day) is giving." Health is a number one priority for the . party, "and so it should be," Beaven said. adding that there is a crisis in health care in Canada, thanks to the" Liberal government. which cut $25 billion from health care: "They tore the heart out .' of health care." He' said the Alliance policy on health care is very simple, as the party believes in the five principals of the Canada Health Act:, universality portability,. comprehensiveness, public administration and accessibility. "We believe. in those strongly," he said, adding that the party's 'answer is ty add a sixth principal - the idea, of a legislated funding ' formula which dictatesfunds must go from the federal government to .provincial for health care. Because it would be legislated, he said. the federal government could. never again cuts to the provinces. •. • The Alliance candidate also commented on agriculture. ,noting that Canadian farmers are at an unfair advantage because of subsidies that .go' to Competitors outside Canada. He. suggested that a solution Would be to approach foreign Action Party supports sovereignty. By Tim Cumming Goderich Signal -Star Editor The Canadian Action Party: would get the country out of the North American Free Trade .Agreement (NAFTA), said'candidate Philip Holley in a telephone interview last week. • Holley, 49, runs a small business. He lives outside of, the,Huron-Bruce riding, near . Forest. • The Canadian Action Party .was started by former Liberal "cabinet minister Paul Hellyer. Holley explains why the party started. "We• got really concerned about where. the country' is going ... if things don't change Canada will' not be a sovereign nation," the candidate •for election in Huron -Bruce said_ "1 have lived all around the world but 1 have yet to see another country 1 would like to live in as much as Canada." NAFTA gives national treatment, to foreign countries. said Holley.' Thousands of Canadian businesses have been lost or sold to U.S. interests, he said. -Canada is facing a lawsuit from a U.S. company. suing for potential profits the company says it's losing because Canada won't give it water. "We have lost our sovereignty.` none of the other . Panics are even talking about it." he said. The party offers a unique stand on monetary reform, according to Holley. This monetary change would allow the government • to pay off the national debt faster than any other party. The, Canadian debt is high because of interest payments, he said, and those interest payments have to be reduced. . Holley ran in the • la'st federal election in Sarnia- Lambton. He said he was successfully able to raise issues that impacted on Canadian sovereignty. • The Canadian Action Party is committed to "people empowerment," said Holley. and that would allow, for free votes in the House of Commons. Trade is governed well under the current Geneva Agreement on Trades and Tariffs (GATT) and NAFTA is not needed, according to Holley. This could benefit farmers. "If we can do away with NAFTA we won't he under all these restrictive agreements they put on our farmers." There is a role for government in funding infrastructure development . and research and development_in .the economy, according to Holley. Taxes would be reduced under.the Canadian Action Party, said Holley, but he 4.1 couldn't say how long it would take to do that.
