Michigan's Ferris State Uni\crsity on.a hockey, scholarship has brought Scaforth's Derek Nesbitt another step closer to his NHL dream. "Just signing that Tetter of intent makes you feel like you've accomplished something." said 18 -year-old Nesbitt. who will leave for Michigan next•fall after three years with Sarnia's Jr. B team. "It means a lot to me. ;,said Nesbitt who signed with Ferris State on Friday after scouts spotted him in last year's All-Star game. Nesbitt had a chance t� sec Michigan State University, one of the teams he will he playing against next year. when he was 10 years old. 1t was then that he decided he wanted to make it to• college hockey on his road to making his dream of playing in the NHL come true: Knowing there is lots of hard work ahead if he's going to impress the scouts. he has seen how there could be opportunity to he recruited by the NHL. Last season in Sarnia. six NHL teamscouts. including the Rangers. Islanders and Chicago, were at games to check out potential players and central scouting was there as well. Perris State was there to check out a couple other players and spotted Nesbitt on the ice. Nesbitt got a call about a week after the All-Star game in mid-December last year and kept in touch with him. bringing him an offer this summer in Sarnia. which he accepted Aug. 3. signing with them officially on Friday. . The weekly contact Ncsbitt has had with the team's assistant coach has left Ncsbitt feeling like he made a good decision because the coach checks on how Ncsbitt is doing, not only in hockey but in life. Nesbitt said they have treated him more like a friend than just a potential player for the team. But between now and. this fall, Nesbitt knows he's got a lot of work ahead of him. Adam Lconhardt, a 19 -year-old defcnccman is now in his second year with the St. Mary's Lincolns, in Western Jr. B hockey. Marc Glannville, a 19-ycar-old left winger, has moved to the Aylmer As from St. Marys last year.
