Several close races make up results
of Huron East's first election
There were several close
races in the Huron East
election as Seaforth's Lin
Steffler defeated Grey
Ward's Robin Dunbar, 1,782
votes to 1.5 78 for the -
position of mayor in the new
municipality that links
. Seaforth. and Brussels with
the Townships of Grey,
Tuckersmith and McKillop
on Jan. 1.
Tuckersmith's Bernie
MacLellan defeated current
Tuckersmith Township
Reeve Bob Broadfoot and
McKillop Township .Reeve
Bill Siemon, for the position
of deputy mayor. with .1,432
votes, 1,211 and 651.
respectively.
Brussels Ward
In the Brussels Ward. 439
of 891 eligible voters 151 per
cent) voted 355 for Dunbar to
101 for Steffler.
There were 248 votes for
MacLellan, 110 votes for
Broadfoot and 74 for
Siemon.
Council seats were won by
Greg Wilson and Joe Seili
with 318 and 264 votes.
Current reeve, Ralph Watson,
was defeated with 245 votes.
Grey Ward
In Grey Ward, 516 of
1,541. voters (33 per cent)
voted 381 for Dunbar and
117 for Steffler.
MacLellan received 238
votes. Broadfoot, 133 and
Siemon 105.
Alvin McLellan and
Graeme MacDonald took the
two council seats with 379
and 306 votes respectively,
defeating Dale Newman who
Deadly substance
stolen from home
A 30 -year-old Kinburn man was Charged with a drinking
and driving offence after being stopped in a RIDE. check" in
McKillop township on Nov. 9:.
The spot check was set up on County Road 12. north of
Seaforth.
The driver was stopped at 4 p.m.
Deadly material'stolen
` A small blue plastic material. stolen after a break-in at a
home in•Exeter. contains'a pure form of nicotine that could be
fatal if it.touches skin.
OPP are warning anyone who comes in contact with the
container. not to open it.
This' solution is extremely poisonous and if it touches a
Person's Skin, will cause paralysis and eventuallythe person's
death," OPP report.
It was.reported stolen from the residence when the break-in
was discovered at 9 p.m. on Nov. 12.
Also taken were two Lakefield .22 calibre rifles an'd a
tranquilizer gun. '
. . The break-in occurred sometime in the last `week.
Tools stolen from vehicle
Police reports a "large quantity" of tools stolen from a
vehicle parked on a property at Cone. 12, Grey Township. ,
The items, including impact socket sets, wrench sets.
Ntakita drill. pry liar and other small hand tools, were reported
uolen Oct. 29 at 4 p.m.
Someone smashed the .rear window of a '1989 Chev
Celebrity. parked next to a barn. was smashed to get at the
owner's tool box.

: home..instead of. going to
Parkwood Hospital in Owen
Sound .for nursing home care;
after the Ministry of Health -
approved two.high priority.

wasn't going to allocate beds
in Huron County' but through
the efforts of the •Zone they
lobbied to haveplaces where
veterans can stay close to
their family. •
"All of the vets are over 75
years' of age and if we can
keep a vet.close to their
family we are doing what we
want." he said.
In the spring of 2000. the
Ministry of Health and Long
Term Care signed an
agreement with Veterans
Affairs Canada to give
veterans who 'had
participated in a theatre of
war higher priority when
they wished to move into a
Long Term Care Facility.
Over the past few months
this has been implemented by
designating a number of beds
throughout_ Southwestern
Ontario. As of the end of
September. two . places
(Priority Access Beds) at
Huronlea were identified for
participation in this program.
The program does not alter
the. current system; the
billing remains as it is for
other veterans qualified for
prot}rams under Veterans
Affairs.: the admission
process. leaves of absence.

other aspects of the operation
remain the same.
"This does not mean that
we hold the beds empty,"
said CathieaBrown, homes

The only change is that
qualified veterans are given
higher priority. (in the same
manner as a crisis admission
is given higher priority) by
the Community Care Access
Centre. This priority will be
given to up to two veterans at
one .time at Huronlea. This
program does not have a
retroactive component.

In McKillop, Ward. 447 of
1,020 (43 percent) voted 280
for Steffler and -162 for
Dunbar. -
There were 233 votes' for
Siemon, 127 for Broadfoot
and 84 for MacLellan.
Seaforth Ward
In Seaforth, 896 of 1,833
(49 per cent) ,voted 762 for
Steffler and 175 for Dunbar.
MacLellan received 296
votes. Broadfoot 477 and
Siemon 139.
Council seats were won by
Dick Burgess and .Bill Teal]
with 625 and 486 votes.
Michael Hak was defeated
with 383 votes.
Tuckersmith Ward
In Tuckersmith Ward 1,063
of 2,380 voters (45 per cent)

needing assistance this year

;Christmas Bureau is operated
by the Huron County
Children's Aid Society and
has been helping families for
more than 40 yews.
Telephone lines for the
bureau are open now and
until Dec. 8 from 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. for families
who require assistance. The
bureau encourages anyone
who needs assistance to call
them. The service is
confidential and by calling,
bureau volunteers will
arrange appointment for
people to visit the branches
to choose items for their
children's Christmas
packages.
