'.Mould be expected. some of these testaments address the need to preserve the memory of. those who'gave their life In the service of Cariada. • The following quotes from our Purpose and Objects serve to. demonstrate this point: "Perpetuate the memory and deeds Of the fallen and those who die • in the future:" • "PrornOte and care for rnemoriak to their valour and .sacrifice, to -provide suitable burial'if required, to• keep an: annual tnrmorial day:'to preserve the records and memories,: of their ,ervrce and to see ' that such services shall not he forgotten, by the nation.:' • _Therefore:: it is a given that the. tradition of retnemhrance is •• i inportant • to Canada and: once every; year those ‘A, ho paid the 'supreme sacrifice are honoured at Cenotaph services and by the -:people of Canada wearing a,poppy. Poppies: are flowers that grow in Flanders Fields in France. Flanders was a place where much fighting took- place `during WWI and_during this fighting. the soldiers -who lived and :fought in the trenches noticed the red flowers blooming all over (he batilegrounds. As time went on and ,the war continued. the Soldiers started' to notice that the poppies started, to hloom on the graves of their friends who had been killed. When the warfinally ended and the people. who served eventually came home. they thought about their friends who were buried in Flanders Fields and they thought about the red poppies which 'grew around the graves. They did not want Canadians to forget that tjieir friends had died' serving Canada and it was decided that . a ceremony would be held - once a year,to honour their .memory and_ the poppy. became •the symbol' that •everyone ;could wear to show that they -remembered too. REMEMBERING THE VETERANS. ROSS RIBEY, DIRECTOR, RUTH TOWNSEND, DIRECTOR WH ITN EY -RI BEY FUNERAL HOME Goderich St. W., Seaforth 527-1390 Let us remember the many veterans who fought for our freedom. Then. along came WWII and the Korean Conflict where a total of 45.443 men and women died. The . people who served .with them. like their earlier counterparts, accepted the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. Canadians -have been very fortunate since the end of the Korean War because. there has not been a major conflict since then until the Gulf War and fortunately. no Canadians were killed during that war. However. Canadians have been 'killed while performing peacekeeping duties for the .United Nations. These Peacekeepers go to countries to make sure that people stop fighting each other and this can be very dangerous work so we mustnot forget to honour these men and women as well.. The poppy is very important to Canada. When 'we wear a poppy, it is our way to make sure -that those • brave Canadians who .were killed in all previous wars and in ongoing peacekeeping duties are not forgotten. The words of philosopher. poet and novelist, George Santayana are as true today as whenhe first - stated them in 1905 - "Those who cannot` remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
