A for the future, he said
growth will continue to
become the focus of couriCtl.
He' says some : serious
planning need to be done,
especially with construction
plans of a new well in

cost, of 5400,000-5500.000 -
are positive signs for'the
municipality. •
"But they .don't' come
without a cost." he said.•
As mayor. Van Bakel •also
sits on Perth County Council
and'says since amalgamation.
the. workload at the -county

Perth: He.,said the

and social -.housing
are issues which will
have direct. affect on
all residents' of the
Bounty now that they
will. .officially be
downloaded from the
provincial govemment by the
-start of 2(01.
He was critical of county
politics. however,, feeling too
much • time • is spent
responding -to wishes from
the province as opposed to
issues locally.
"We're too quick to accept
downloading rather than •
putting up a fight, ',he said. •
The largest issue which
drew Van Bakel and the
municipality into the -spotlight
.was their Ontario -Municipal
Board TOMB) hearing earlier
this .year over_ their
comprchensise ioning bylaw
and their designs on a cap of
animal units to protect the
way of'life in this
municipality. •
"The way it's turned out
has all been positive. Council
and the people in the
municipality, for the most
part, have been supportive of
our stance," he said. .
"We've also had comments
far .and wide about the
leadership of West Perth on
this issue."
What was a little
disappointing with regard to
the controversial livestock
cap provincewide is the lack.
of firm support from the.
Province's agricultural
bodies; specifically the Rural
Ontario Municipal
Association (ROMA), said
Van Bakel - especially since
West Perth had two. hoard
members of the ROMA board
on council, chair
Vorstenbosch and director
Bill French. •
''Rtey seemed to it on the
fence," he said.
Van Bakel hopes a court
case in London Nov. IS
dealing with appeals to the
OMB decision under case law
by Ben Gardiner Farms puts
an end once and fix all to the
Issue.
