Huron -Perth schedule could begin Nov. r
From Pogo 1
A call for convenors was
answered Monday when it
Was -confirmed that all fall
sports in Huron and Perth -
boys vt3lleyball. girls
basketball, field hockey anti
cross country - would have
convenors.
The number of teams
competing in the fall season
were to be announced
vesterda) while both tennis
and golf. normally played.in
the fall season. have been
moved to the spring schedule.
Of the tour convenors
named. three arc from
Stfatford.St. Mike's while the
fourth" is Deb H(imuth,
principal at South Huron.
District Secondary School in
Escter. who .wilt act as
conienor for field hockey.
White some argue they vote
will o1Ter student athletes an
opportunity to compete in a
structured league. others say
the vote ma\ have ruined the
future of high school sports.
. Since Sept. 25. w hen.the
'Huron -Perth association last
met and. announced there
would he no • association

have. had coaches offer,

The deci.sionlIto resume.

an opportunity to pressure the

(WOSSAA 1 -in hopes. of
sending teams to compete at

operation, they have chose to
disband meaning teams can
apply hrectly to OFSAA.
However. of the 14
conferences that are operating
all have reduced schedules
while half only have pockets
of activity..
"The only reason for the
(Huron -Perth) vote was to
provide an opportunity for
teams to move on and that's
what the motion does," said
Doherty. -
During the meeting in
Mitchell a group of parents
from Goderich asked the
HPAA to pass the new
motion and allow their sons
to play volleyball. •
-We basically told them if
they have the need to stick by
their guns that's fine but get
the hell out of the road (and
let the boys play)." said
Goderich resident and' parent
Debbie Bauer.•
-Willfully grinding the
spirit out of this group of
young men wouldbe the
largest of injustices."
While resumption of high
school sports had its
supporters. there were those

without resolving the issues
was not a good idea.
"I do not believe that this
will resolve the problems
(facing students and teachers)
and that this will not create an
opportunity for all athletes
and all teams,"said GDCI
athletic director Darren
Hebert, who voted against the
motion..
"I fear very strongly that
this vote may have sealed the
fate of the majority of teams.
"This decision will do
nothing for those kids who
won't have a coach, in fact
I'm concerned that this
decision will further frustrate
coaches who don't have
time."
According to Hebert
pockets of activity won't
solve the problem of
increased classes and less
time for teachers to help with
extracurricular activities.
"Some of us have taken the
stand that we're fighting fpr
all the kids." said Hebert.
"I'm as concerned for that
flute player as I am for that
left-handed hitter. I care about
them all." .
"We should be working on
something to resolve the
problem that seems to be
teachers feel they don't have
the time because of extra
workload." •
For veteran coaches like
Seaforth District. Secondary
School athletic director Terry
Johnston, changes to the high
school sports system are not
inevitable.

Huron -Perth schedule could

However. the fact remains
