Brussels residents worry village needs will be ignored

with the Huron East
transition board.
Steffler said that she cares
about Brussels since she was
born there, married and lived
there in the late 60s and her
son played hockey there.
She defended her lack of
involvement with the
transition board saying that
she tried to get on the
committee but her council
denied her request. •
"But now I'm pleased I.
wasn't involved because I
have no baggage and I can
slate my positions freely,"
'she said.
One resident questioned
how the newly -amalgamated
niunicipality will decide
which work takes .priority" in
each community.,
"If there's a back street in
Brussels that needs. work,
how can they (council
members) vote on it if they
haven't even seen where it
is?„
Steffler said she hopes the
five municipalities' five-year
. :plans will be brought
together and prioritized.
"No area should come first
and we'll have to viiit the
whole area," she said.
When questions arose
about why .Seaforth's town
hall was chosen as the
headquarters of Huron East,
McKillop ,Reeve Bill
Siemon, who is running for
deputy -mayor, said that
Seaforth was decided to
become the centre of
Tuckersmith., McKillop and
Seaforth when the three
municipalities were talking
about amalgamating before
Brussels and Grey joined the
talks...
"For $250,000 we're not
doing anything that doesn't
need to be done and 75 per
cent ofit is going to be
funded through grants. But,
we were let down a bit by
the architects since the
prices came in a little higher
than a lot of us expected," he
said.
Dunbar said he was upset
about thc renovation costs.
"I'd still like to see a
needs study done on the
roads so we'll have a guide
rather than political pressure
to get the roads done." he
added.
Dunbar bristled at a
question about why he
supported the study done on
Huron County's ambulance
services that recommended
Seaforth; s ambulance be
moved from town to a
location in between Clinton
and Seaforth on Highway 8,
a road which the questioner
said closed down often
during the winter.
"Is this a quiz set up by
the Seaforth group for Lin? I
stand by my vote. That study
is the best one that's come
through. We have snow
everywhere in the county - it
doesn't matter where the
ambulance is," said bunbar.
Steffler said in • her
opening speech that she will
not give up the fight to keep
ambulance services in
Seaforth.
"Moving ambulances out
of Seaforth will have a
detrimental effect. The
average response times of 17
to 19 minutes will become
even longer. Hopefully a
new set of faces at county
council will give us a chance
to revisit this issue," she
said.
Siemon said that since
ambulances are emergency
vehicles like police cruisers,
they should be able to go
through road blocks if roads
are closed because of bad
weather.
"We can't tell people
where to. live. We can only
tell ambulances they have
eight minutes to respond,"
he said.
When asked why Brussels
and Grey Township did not
join the Business Retention
and Expansion committee,
which has members in
Seaforth, Tuckersmith and
McKillop, Watson said
Brussels didn't have enough
money in its budget to.
support the committee.,
Dunbar said Grey
Township had "no particular.
reason" not to join but was
waiting to meet with the
Seaforth members.
Tuckersmith Reeve Bob
Broadfoot, who is running
for deputy -mayor, said he'd
like to see more industry
moving to areas that have
not been developed so far.
"There's not 'much land
left in Seaforth but Vanastra
has vacant land and
buildings." he said.
Broadfoot said
Tuckersmith has built up a
reserve fund of three
quarters of $1 million but
still builds a major'bridge
every year.
"We've been very frugal
with our money," he said.
Dunbar pointed ,out that
while - the original
municipalities can keep their
reserve funds for up to five
years, council should set up
a protocol: that would ensure
they aren't cheated out of
their reserves.
"Council could filibuster
any move to spend the
money until the time to use
them runs out," he gave as
an example of what he
would like to prevent• from
happening.
Both Dunbar and. Steffler
cited water quality as an
issue in this election.
Dunbar said that he had
raised thc issue of water
quality as it relates to
intensive livestock barns at
Huron County couhcil and
secured provincial- funding
to map the county's aquifirs
and create sentinel wells, all
before the Walkerton water
crisis occurred.
Steffler said she's scared
by information from Huron
County's medical officer of
health that the area's shallow
aquifirs of less than 100 feet
are - already "grossly
contaminated."
"We have to recognize
what- we're doing to the
environment. The last thing
we want is a Walkerton
situation here," she said.
Joe Seili, who has been on
Brussels council for six
years but never elected since
he's "doing the job no one
else wanted to do," said he's
running for Brussels ward
because he wants to keep on
top of Brussels' interests.
"`I .don't believe in
spending money for
government jobs. I'd rather
see the money go to roads
and sidewalks," he said,

on Brussels council for 12
years, said he's running for
Brussels ward because he
wants to make sure Brussels
gets its "fair share of
services and municipal
projects."
And, Brussels Reeve
Ralph Watton said he's
running for Brussels ward
,"to make sure you get the
best bang for your buck" and
to make Aaron East a well-
rounded municipality which
is "much more than a sum of
its parts."
Watson was also the only
politician to endorse another
candidate when he stated he
• supported Dunbar for mayor.
