THE HURON EXPOSITOR, October 18, 2000-9
Centenaires have two close losses over the weekend
It was 'a disappointing,
game for the Cents Friday
night as they dropped a 3-2
decision to the visiting
Mitchell Hawks: .
The Cents had the Netter
chances to.score throughout
the game but had trouble
finishing their plays.
The Hawks were first on
the board when they
capitalized on a man
advantage with Joe Nesbitt in
the box for a slashing minor.
At the three-minutc mark it
was Mitchell again making
the most of a bad pinch at the
Cents' blue line and scoring
on the odd man rush.
Seaforth finally managed
to get on the board with one
second remaining in the first
when. Scott Van Dooren
jumped on a rebound and
deked the Hawks' netminder
sending the Cents to the
dressing room down by one
after the first. '
The second period was
scoreless despite some good
opportunities to score. Ten
minutes into the third. the
Cents' powerplay dumped
the puck into their own net
giving Mitchell• what would
hold up as the winner. Forty
seconds later Jay Baker fired
his fourth goal of the year
narrowing the deficit to 3-2,
but even with the goalie
pulled the local boys could
not come up with the tying
goal. .
Van Dooren expressed
frustration that they had been
hitting the Hawks' netminder
with shots all night more than
he had been making any
saves.
Coach Jason Papple gave
the Hawks credit for their
effort:
"They did what they had to
win. We had some hustle but
weren't great at playing the
system tonight. I think their
winning goal proves things
just weren't going our way
today."
Shots'on the game were
even but scoring
opportunities favoured the
Cents heavily. A terrific
crowd was on hand for the
game and Cents .General
Manager, Dave . Parsons
thought "word was getting
out that this may be a team to
watch out for.",
The boys almost proved'
him right as they travelled to
take on the defending
champion Port Stanley
Lakers on Saturday night.
The Cents were flying as
they outshot the Lakers 16-6
in the first period. However,
it was the .Lakers on the
board first as they jumped on
their own rebound at the 12 -
minute mark.
The Cents kept swarming
the Lakers but were unable to
solve the Lakers' goalie.
With 22 seconds remaining
in the first. Curtis Meyers fed
a pass to Mike Murray at the
point and his shot.. Was
deflected by Josh Holland to
score his first of the season,
tying:the game at one after
thc'first period:
Port Stanley went up•2-I
• midway through- the second
that was -a back and forth
affair. At. 4:14 of the second,
the line of Tim Sills, J.D. -
'Nolan and Jeff Arnold
• combined to again even the
-score, setting up a wild third
'period.
The Lakers were able to
. take advantage of the no red
. line rule and score two
stretch play goals with a
minute to -go in the game. '
• With Robertson out of the
net, the Cents were able to
poke another one across the
line to narrow the gap to 4-3
but were not able to the tie it
up.

Local swimmers get
training advice from
Olympic athletes
The Huron Hurricanes competitive swim team launched
their season,at a training camp in Woodstock Oct. 6-7 with
words of advice from former Canadian Olympic athletes.
The swimmers from across Huron County were given tips
to improve their starts and diving, flip turns and each of the
four strokes — butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke and
backstroke. .
Two Olympians, Stephen Clarke and Rheema Abdo. spoke
to the group, detailing the work and commitment•that took
them to the Olympic podium.
Abdo competed at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles in
the backstroke and brought home a bronze medal. She trained
with the Kingston Blue Marlins and the Trenton Dolphins.
She stressed visualizing is important for her, helpingto focus
entirely on the race itself.
Clarke, a freestyler and butterflyer, competed at the 1.992
Olympics in Barcelona, winning a bronze medal. He trained
with COBRA. a small swim club at the time. starting at age
live.
Clarke said his most memorable moment was when he
realized he had made it on the Olympic team. He urged the
group to swim 'for the fun of.it'. and to try and avoid putting
pressure on yourself.
Clarke went to the Sydney Olympics as part of Toronto's
bid for the 2008 Olympics and told of his experiences as a
spectator rather than a competitor:
