Seaforth Horticulture Society
Seaforth and District
Horticulture Society met
Oct. 11 at Northside Church
with 35 in attendance
including guests from
Clinton, Hensall and
Brussels.
Betty Hulley introduced
our guest speaker Bob Budd
from Goderich. He runs a
community garden and gave
a very interesting talk on
how things are run.
People pay so much to
belong and help when they
can and in return they
receive fresh vegetables
when they are ready. He
plants his melons in black
plastic which cuts down on
wecds and also holds
moisture of which they
require a lot.
He does not put pesticide
on the potato plants but
brushes the bugs into a pail.
He says there are good bugs
and bad ones, the good ones
he puts back on the plants.
He also likes to sow oats
now which he tills into the
ground. He brought two
baskets of vegetables which
he gave away to people that
answers his questions. Bob
Budd was thanked by Bea
Stoll and presented with a
cheque.
Pat Rodney chaired the
meeting and the treasurer's
report was given by Dilys
Finnigan. A thank you letter
was read from the directors
of the fair board.
Nancy Kale reported on
Ciderfest.
Scouts raising g -funds for jamboree
Fifteen members of the assist with the purchase of
First Seaforth Scout Troop, canoe equipment. The..
and their leaders, peddled Trillium Foundation grant,
their bicycles approximately along with some locally -
20 kilometres to participate raised funds, allowed the
group to purchase six
kevlai-shell canoes, paddles,
life jackets and safety
equipment.
Mike Trapnell, a parent of
the two of the Scouts, is
constructing a trailer for
.transporting and storing the
canoes using a frame which
was donated by Family
Paradise Campground.
. This is a special year for
the Scout troop as they
prepare for a trip to the
Canadian Jamboree (CJ) on
Prince Edward Island. CJ is
held every four years and it
is considered to be a
highlight for youth involved
in the Scouting movement.
The local Beavers, Cubs
and Scouts have been fund
raising for the past three
years in order to have
enough funds to assist the
in a canoe training camp at
Family Paradise
Campground on Oct. 1.
The training camp was
geared at improving their
paddling as well as
development of safety and
rescue skills. .
"The skills these Scouts
are developing will allow
them to safely and '
confidently participate in
future canoe trips on area
rivers," said trooper Mike
Ash.
The Seaforth Scouting
movement received a
financial 'shot in the arm'
last spring when they were
informed that their
application to the Trillium
Foundation had been
approved.
The group had submitted
an application for $5000 to

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Never give up on anyone -
miracles happen every day.
Scouts with their trip this
July.
Their aim is to have
enough money in the bank
to pay for the transportation,
camping and food costs for
the trip so that the youth
attending only have to pay
for their registration fee
($500) and souvenirs.
It is anticipated that the
total costs for sending the
15 boys and girls and their
leaders to this year's event
will approach $20, 000.
With this in mind, the
Scouts' fundraising efforts
have gone into overdrive.
Each of the Scouts sought
pledges for the bike ride to
their recent camp and
through this effort they were
able to add over $500 to
their CJ fund.
The Scouts are optimistic
that they 'will reach their
financial goal in time for the
trip to P.E.I. this summer.
