Only four public school trustees
seek re-election on Nov. 13
By Stew Slater
Special to The Expositor
Avon Maitland District School Board chair Wendy
Anderson is one of four incumbents to seek re-election to the
public school board in this year's municipal election.
She announced her intentions last week, despite what she
called the considerable challenge of representing a widespread
constituency and juggling family responsibilities.
"All those phone calls I was getting from members of the
public back in January (during the midst of the board's
discussions about school closure) had one thing in common,
and that was that they didn't want to be a trustee," Anderson
said. "They didn't want to make the decisions we were
making."
She says she was inspired to seek reelection by a desire to
complete the task of dealing with funding and administrative
issues brought on by Conservative government -led changes in
the way the provincial education ministry funds schools.
And she points to the current board's success in managing
the amalgamation of the former Huron and Perth public
school boards as proof she's up to the challenge.
In North Huron, incumbent Colleen Schenk will be
challenged by James Floyd, a Seaforth-area resident.
Incumbent Don Brillinger will be acclaimed in North Perth
and long-time trustee Ray Ford will seek re-election against
three other candidates in Stratford. Incumbent Atje Tuyten, of
Stratford, is not running.
Central Huron will be represented by Seaforth businessman
Charles Smith, who will be acclaimed. Incumbent Abby
Armstrong cites family commitments and a frustration with
dealing with the provincial government as reasons she won't
be seeking re-election.
In South Huron, incumbent Bob Allan won't seek re-
election, but prominent school board critic Randy Wagler has
entered the race. Wagler, who chaired a community-based
committee examining student accommo 1ation in the area in
1999; will face John Swinkels in the Nov, 13 vote.
Maggie Laprade, who was appointed in Perth South and
West Perth after the resignation of the victor from the 1997
election, will step down, citing family issues.
Two candidates have stepped forward: Staffa-area resident
Carol Bennewies and, Tony Jackson, who made several
presentations to the board during its aborted attempt last year
to close Downie Central Public School near St. Marys.
Ray "Butch" Desjardine in Northwest Huron will he
acclaimed. Nine-year veteran Vicki Culbert, the incutnbent in
the Goderich-area trusteeship, has stepped down.
Three veterans will battle it out
for Hibbert seat in West Perth
By Andy Bader
Mitchell Advocate Editor
For the most part, it has
-turned out to be quite an
election race in West Perth
after all.
Besides the two-man race
for mayor between
incumbent John Van Bakel
and current deputy -mayor
Bert Vorstenbosch, there will
be elections for three
councillor seats in Mitchell
ward since eight candidates
have come forward; and a
race for two councillor spots
in both Fullarton and
Hibbert wards, with three
candidates coming forward
in each area.
There are, however,
acclamations` for the position
of Deputy Mayor, as Coun.
Barb MacLean has moved
up; and in Logan ward, as
incumbent Patsy Campbell
joins longtime municipal
politician Edwin "Ted"
Illman on cbuncil.
In Mitchell, incumbents
Ruth Fiebig and Doug
Pfeifer are seeking re-
election, and are joined by
newcomers Sandi Cullaton,
Don Eplett (former clerk -
treasurer), Gerry Kehl,
Tricia Nahrgang and Darryl
Seigner. Veteran politician
Louis Morello, who was a
Mitchell councillor years
ago, is also seeking a
councillor's position. There
is room 'for just three
candidates, however.
In Fullarton, incumbent
Bili French is seeking re-
election, and he is joined by
newcomers Charles Beatty,
the recently -retired sergeant
with the West Perth and
Sebringville OPP; and Ross
McIntosh, of RR 2 St. Pauls.
Three veteran poli icians
will also battle it out for two
spotsiin Hibbert ward. as
incumbent councillor Lou
Maloney is also seeking re-
election. Former Hibbert
Reeve Walter McKenzie is
also vying for a spot, as is
former Deputy -Reeve Bob
Norris.
How to celebrate last town council
meeting challenges Seaforth councillors
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Staff
While discussing how to
mark Seaforth town council's
final meeting on Dec. 5,
Reeve Lin Steffler and Coun.
Heather Robinet were not in
favor of reenacting the town's
first council meeting.
"We'll meet you at the
restaurant afterwards since
there were no women allowed
in those days," said Steffler at
last week's council meeting.
Administrator Jack
McLachlan offered that
council could do anything
from the extreme of getting
into costume and acting out
Seaforth town council's very
first meeting to just going out
for dither.
Mayor Dave Scott
suggested having an early
meeting, followed by dinner
at a restaurant for council and
town staff.
Colin. Mike Hak suggested
the women councillors might
instead cook supper.
"That would probably have
been appropriate at that
time," he laughed.
Robinet challenged the men
to get on the dofnmittee to
Seaforth BIA seeking
quotes for third
downtown mural
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Staff
The Seaforth Business Improvement Association (BIA) is
in the process of obtaining quotes for a third mural for
downtown Seaforth.
Deputy -clerk Cathy Garrick has contacted two mural artists
and is in the process of contacting a third before a decision is
made.
The third mural will be a 16 by 24 foot mural of a 1905
picture of the Seaforth Fire Department hose and reel team to
be located on Highway 8 on the wall of Seaforth. Plumbing
and Heating, says Garrick.
"We had been hoping to have it painted before the fire
convention (during the summer). It's still all subject to
council's approval." she says.
BIA delivery person
The Seaforth BIA has hired a delivery person to post mail
and make bank deliveries for downtown businesses.
Ryan Jewitt is working two hours every Tuesday morning
for the BIA. He started Sept. 12.
Jewitt, who has Downs Syndrome, has a mentor from the
non-profit organization Partners in Employment assisting him
with his duties.
He actually began offering the service as a high school co-
op student and when the co-op period ended, "we missed
him," says Seaforth deputy -clerk Cathy Garrick.
Garrick says the service is particularly valuable for
businesses with only one staff person working at a time.
BIA Bucks discontinued
The popular BIA Bucks program will not be offered by the
Seaforth BIA this year.
"We've.been thinking of cancelling it throughout the year.
Part of the problem is that a few of the local businesses took
in the majority of the bucks and we do try to spread the
benefits of BIA promotions to as many as possible," says
Seaforth deputy -clerk Cathy Garrick.
She says the BIA Bucks program began about five years
ago and the BIA had raised the investment from $2,500 to
$3,000 in BIA Bucks each year over that period.
The bucks usually came available Nov. 1 and shoppers
could buy them and use them in local stores to receive a 10
per cern discount in Seaforth.
"It was a very popular program will shoppers. It's not
permanently cancelled but it's on hold for now," says Garrick.
The $30,000 normally spent on BIA Bucks will be redirected to
to downtown beautification.
organize the event.'
"Show us, what men
do," she joked.
"Yes, men were the big
can wigs 100 years ago." added
Steffler.
