Armstrong decides not to run again
By Susan Hund.rtmark
Expositor Stott
After six .years of fighting the provincial government for
fairfunding for rural school hoards as a trustee, Abhy
Armstrong says she's had enough.
"I've been thinking about it endlessly for the last couple of
weeks and have decided motto. run." says Armstrong. • - - .•
''i',.e always wanted to he rhea for the kids hut more -and
more i feel .like my hands are tied-. It's like•heing an
emergency room nurse.and watching your patient .bleed to
death because yew can't buy. any bandages."
Armstrong cites the lack of provincial funding for busing,
which she's been fighting since hefore the Avon Maitland
District School Board was formed, as one example of why she
feels frustrateda,a trustee.
"We've heard for five years 'that the transportation issue is
going to be addressed in the next budget. We in rural Ontario
need:husing. We have to have it. There's no other way to get
kids around. But. the people making the decisions really don't
cars." she says: -
•Armstrong says working as a school hoard trustee is turning
her into an "angry person" and she was concerned that if .she
ran again in this fall's municipal election: she'd "become part
of the problem."
While the local board was under a lot of pressure dunng the
;school closure process last year. Armstrong. says.the daily
phone calls. faxes and e-mails from local parents was not part
of the frustration causing her not to run wain.
• -
"i wasn't upset that they were angry at me. What they were
• dealing with was so wrong and senseless, you've got to expect
• some reaction' as a trustee. Parents should be angry." she says.
And. while Armstrong acknowledges that ratepayers are
tired from fighting for their hospitals and schools. she urges
them to keep fighting.
."Don't sit back and tet them take it away from you." she•
says. "The provincial government is definitely at fault.
They're running the province by running people into the
ground and that dust doesn't work;' -
Armstrong is angry about the way the province is constantly
criticizing teachers. . .
"How -can teachershe excited about.their jobs when they're
told day after. day by the province how miserable they are
The cheapest thing to he done is to restore faith in the
system." she says.
Armstrong says she's also angry' about rhe province':
• education funding formula, which she describes as "one size
fits nobody." •
' "The province .promised a fu ding formula change that
changed the inherent unfairness of funding between hoards
and that hasn't happened. The needs of rural Ontario are being
ignored," she says.
• Armstrong says while she's miss the "incredible parents
and "wonderful educators." she has :to put her four children
and her health first.
"It was .a very. difficult 'decision to make but Fm gnine to -
have to stand back this time." she says.
