Martene, whose mother died of Hodgkins disease, a form of cancer, when he was four, and whose wife Tammy is a Hodgkins survivor,•says he's happy to "do his bit" in the fight against cancer. "In the 20 years between the time my mother died from Hodgkins and my wife had it, they found a cure for it," he says. Martene says hats of all kinds can be dropped off at his store to be distributed through regional cancer centres and cancer support groups. Hats Off to Chemo was founded in 1999 and has a head office in Shakespeare, Ont. Donations can now be made at 569 Sears outlets and Union Gas in Kingston. "They say they can't keep up with the demand for hats. Drop them off here and we'll send them on." says Marlene. Steckle planned to attend funeral Hotel where Tnideau was present as Justice Minister prior. to announcing his candidacy. . The crowd clamouring around. Trudeau was so great, he remembers, Steckle actually left the hotel in fear for his personal security. Only two months ago, says Steckle. Trudeau autographed a number of photo albums prepared by the official photographer of prime ministers; Jean -Marc Carisse. He says people's emotional reaction to Trudeau was evident in the sheer numbers who took the time to pay their respects after his death, even taking off work to visit Parliament Hill. "There's something (strong) that motivates people to do that," he says. "The man certainly left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of the Canadian people." From Paget "As -Mr. Trudeau left the platform, the people made his going to his waiting car almost impossible as they clung to his arms and pleadedfor autographs," says the story. White says while she met Trudeau that day, she didn't really get to talk to him. "It was like a zoo that day," she says. Her father, however, as a Liberal MP for Huron County in the 1950s who remained involved in politics his whole life, had much more interaction with Trudeau. don't think he supported Trudeau at first but I think he - did love him in the end. I think he thought Trudeau was a little .flip, a little bohemian but he really respected him," she says. Kim McLean, of Exeter, who is' A.Y. McLean's nephew and a lifelong Liberal supporter, remembers shaking Trudeau's hand in a mall in Rexdale when he was a student in Toronto. He remembers hearing how A.Y., as a delegate at the 1968 leadership convention, backed -another Liberal leadership candidate called John Winters when Trudeau ran for the party leadership. "He backed Winter at first but he -was soon on side with Trudeau," says McLean. McLean calls Trudeau's death "a horrible loss." "Trudeau had a brilliant intellect. He was likely Canada's greatest statesman. There's no question this is the greatest funeral since Laurier," he says. Huron -Brute MP Paul Steckle said in a phone interview from Ottawa that he would be attending yesterday's state funeral in Montreal. He says people's views of Trudeau were varied. "Froni my riding's perspective, not unlike many others. . there were those who liked him, those who respected him as a great Canadian and those who disliked him and disliked him fiery much." . ' Along with A.Y. McLean, Steckle was a delegate at the leadership convention in 1968. He was also at the Royal York Local doctors hope to attract one more woman doctor to town From Page Dr. Shepherd adds that there's no better place than a small community to really get to know your patient and therefore, get to understand the true nature of a medical problem he or she could be having. "After 10 years in this community, I know the families I see inside and out. And. that really benefits my ability to help people." she says. , Dr. Percival says shit loves being a doctor in a rural community because of the increased opportunity to actually practice medicir{e. — --- — "You're not referring someone to another doctor all the time. like you do in the city. Here, you deal with it and you feel much more well-rounded and fulfilled as a doctor," she says. She says she's able to work at emergency, in her family practice: in obstetrics and as an anesthetist, opportunities she wouldn't necessarily have in the city. While Seaforth has had other women doctors, Dr. Percival says loneliness and job transfers for their husbands have caused them to leave: 'Recruitment is a big issue and a -chronic problem, ' says Dr. Shepherd. "We're very aware of the problem across southwestern Ontario." This week... remember to place your ad in The Hur 1► n Expositor early!
