Q. I read somewhere that men are apt to suffer more from a•
spouse's death than women. Is this true?
A It is usually true if you ask a man. It is usually not true if
you ask a woman. Both sexes experience the same grief process
and the same emotions. The differences he in the kind of social
support that is available.
When a wife dies, the widower not only loses his primary
relatignshp but his social relationship as well. He may be less
able or willing to recreate these connections for himself, and
therefore isolation may be a pattern that evolves for him.

Enrolment higher than projected by SS
students in Huron -Perth Catholic schools
Stow Slater
Special to The Expositor
Based on September enrolment. there are 55 more students
in the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board this year
than was originally projected by board staff.
"There are not many surprises, apart from the fact we have
more students than we were expecting," explained director of
education Geatan Blanchette, while delivering an enrolment
report to trustees at a regular board meeting Monday. Sept.
25.
Enrolment compared to last year is still down in the Huron -
Perth board, but only by a total of five students. Staff had
projected a 60 -student drop from 1999 -2000 -
"It gave us a challenge because we had to provide extra
classes at two schools." Blanchette .said. "But those arc
always nice challenges."
One new class was added in the English portion of St.
Mary's school in Goderich, where there is also a French
Immersion program.
And. perhaps not surprisingly. the other was put in, place at
St. James elementary school, located in Seaforth, where a
nasty fight over school closure has pitted many in the
community against the Catholic board's "public" counterpart,
the Avon Maitland District School Board.
But Blanchette is quick to explain the original plan was to
eliminate a class at St. James, and the "addition" of one class
from the projected numbers is really just the retention of an
existing class. He also stresses that the additional students at
the Seaforth school didn't transfer from the public system.
"(The possible transfer of students from the Avon Maitland
board) was my original thought as well. but when you look at
the facts, you realize it's people moving in from outside the
jurisdiction," he said
In the same report to trustees. Blanchette explained the
Huron -Perth board's efforts to comply with the provincial
government's new class size requirements. According to last
spring's controversial Bill 74, elementary classes must
average 24.5 students, across each board's- territory.
According to Blanchette's report, entitled "School

Organization 2000-2001," the overall average across the
Huron -Perth board is 23.6.
Some schools are above the provincial requirement.
including St. Columhan at 26.8 and Sacred Heart in
Wingham, at 25.7. But others are well below the maximum:
St. Joseph's in Kingsbridge has an average class size of 16.9,
while St. Patrick's in Dublin comes in at 19.
Blanchette notes boards can be penalized for utilizing less
than the maximum class size average. However. Huron -Perth
avoids that fate because five schools .-- Sacred Heart. St.
Joseph's. Precious Blood in Exeter. St. Mary's in Hesson and
St. Joseph in Clinton -- receive special designation under the
"Small Schools" program.
