There's still time for fall golf
to make up for rainy summer
Summer turns to fall and the golf
season begins do wind down for most
Canadian 'golfers. Unfortunately, the
summer was so wet .that many
golfers played much less golf than •
they would have liked. September
has been relatively pleasant and with
any luck at all. the season will be.
extended into October and
November.
Thereis still plenty of time left to play if
you plan aheadf
Getting out during the week is great if you
can get the time off work. -
. Retired seniors. shift Workers and those
taking late holidays often have the perfect
opportu6lity to enjoy golf. Cool autumn
mornings usually warm up into comfortable
mid -days perfect for a round of golf.
-, The courses;areJgenerally quieter during
the week at this time of -year, especially with
all the youngsters back in school: Many
1. !courses have autumn specials that make the •
round even more -attractive to those without
memberships.
..Playing after wort is a bit more
challenging. The days are shortening quickly
and each evening affords less time for golf •
than the onelbefore. You can get a quick nine
in after.work but it's tough to get a whole •18
r in 1-'
This is -particularly true if everyone has a
mind to come out at the same time. Holdups.
at the to can severely limit the number of
holes you can play after work. one reason
why a member$hip can have advantages over
greens fee play. -
Once the clocks change, the after work golf
is almost impossible.
GQIf for many is then restricted to weekend
plays 1
Of course. with eveyyone wanting to play
on the weekends it's advisable to book times.
Early.Fnorning times can be hampered by
frost so most golf courses stop taking the
really early tee times in the'fall.
Some members get to the course before the
pro shop is oipen and that is generally no
problem. 1
However. if there is frost you must pdt
walk on the .greens until the frost,. has gone.
Wafjlying on frosty greens breaks down the
cell structure in the blades of grass and turns
the grass brown. Footjrints can be seen for
several days afterwards so greeni
superintendents really appreciate golfers who
wait until the suis; melts the frost.
Locally a number of newsworthy
happenings: •`
Dave Barr. who was recently inducted into
Tartan chameleon
By Carolanne Dolt)
the Canadian Golf Hall Of Fame, stopped by
enroutc from The Canadian Open to. the
Bayer Championship in Sarnia. This was
Dave's second visit to the course and he
enjoyed a tour of the proposed new golf holes
before heading to visit friends in Grand
Bend.
'Kevin Bennett defeated Todd Doig in an
18 -hole playoff for the Men's Club
Championship. Both golfers had played'well
in thefirst two rounds and finished tied at
144. Kevin fired a 72 in the playoff to beat
Todd by three strokes.
The Senior championship was won by
Brian Carrier with a 145. -The Junior Boys
club champion is Brad Henderson with a 151.
The Ladies Champion is Lindsay McEwin
with a 152.
Brad and Lindsay capped off an excellent
season with their victories in the club
championship. Brad finished third On the
Tyson Tour and Lindsay won the Tyson Tour
girl's division.
In Match Play. there; are a couple of hold
ups.- We .hope these golfers will get their
matches :completed so the finals can be set
up. Craig Alexander defeated Alex
Westerhout and now waits for the winner
between Doug Corriveau and Al Nigh. Jerry
Staples defeated Paul Selvey and now meets
Kevin Bennett who defeated Sean Beattie.
Doug Elliott defeated Jamie Caldwell and
awaits the victor in the Cam Doig vs Graham
Nesbitt match.
In Junior Match play. Brad Henderson has
advanced to the Ifipals and is waiting for Cal
O'Reilly and Iani Johnston to playoff to
determine his opponent. 1 .
1 In Senior Match Play, Joe Dick is in the
final but he is waiting for the match between
Gard McTaggart and Steve Hook to take
place. Fred Leitch is also waiting for the
results df this match. -
This Sunday, our annual Junior Buddy Day
take ls place beginning at l p.m. This is a nine
hole scramble event with an adult and a
youngster playing for fun and a few rriedals
that will be passed out. After golf there will
be a light luneh. Anyone can enter. so call the
pro shop for details. - 1
Next Monday is the Senior closing. Sept.
