Despite delays because
of high water and wet
Weather, the construction
of a new bridge on County
Road 3 in Turkersmith
Township is proceeding on
schedu.le.•
"Normally. it takes about
four months to build a
bridge.." said Huron
County engineer. Sandra
Lawson.
Work had started June 5
on what is known as
Brucefield Bridge. located
between Egmondville and
Brucefield.
It crosses the Broadfoot
Dram and is expected to be
finished Oct. 5.. .
"We were hoping to be
dune sooner but we -lost
three weeks in July to the
wet weather," said Lawson.
The bridge is being
completely rebuilt and has
meant a detour around that
section of County Road 3.
adding about a five-minute
drive to Brucefield. .
The drain is nitrmally dry
in the summer but -the wet.
weather led to high- water.
delays when a construction=
crew was working on the
piers for the bridge..
Lawson said • they
decided to replace .the.
bridge after it :had
deteriorated to apoint
where- it would have.
required load 'restrictions.
"That's a majcr..truck
route." said Lawson. so the
county decided to replace
the bridge rather than limit
the site of trucks that
could use the .road. '
The projectis. expected
to cost close to $390.000
but is being paid for
through a provincial
government's special
circumstances tund.
The county had applied
for the funding to do work
on -several bridges in the
county. - :
Wet weather has also
been a problem' for. repair.
work. being done on.
`-L-on-desborough--Bridge -
where the Ministry of:
Labour has shut the•project
down for three weeks.
There. the bridge has
been reduced w one lane
but crews are not able .to
work because of high•
water levels.
The water course the
bridge revers drains the
Hul.l.ett Swamp' and
Maitland River and heavy
rains have increa.cd the
flow to a point Lawson
said the Ministry ut
Labour doesn't`.feel it is
sate forcrews to be
working around because 'of
potentially strong currents.

Making welfare work.
Your success is
helping others succeed:
Congratulations to the entire
team in Huron County.
Since -1995, the Harris government has been.
reforming the welfare system and the results
have been tremendous.,The welfare caseload
in Ontario has declined by more. than 50 per
cent and a big reason for this success has
been the hard work of people in communities
like Huron County. .
Taxpayers demand high standards and the
team in Huron County has not only met, but
exceeded those standards. Huron County is
one of the top 10 communities in Ontario
to exceed its work=for•welfare placement
target. Placements offer welfare recipients
the chance to get practical work exberience,
Skills and the self-confidence to get and hold
a job. The efforts of senior management,
the caseworkers, and the entire welfare staff
are making a huge difference in the lives
of many people.
Moving people from welfare
to work benefits us all.
