News Tilt HURON EXPOSITOR, September 13, 2000-7 New principal plans to research ways to keep SDHS open By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Staff Seaforth District High School's new principal Jeff Reaburn wants to see as many parents as possible at the school's first parent council meeting of the school year on Sept. 20. "The stronger the group, the more productive it could be in coming up with ideas to keep the school open," he says. Reaburn, who moved from Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton where he was vice principal, says he hopes to look into several options to increase the. enrolment of SDHS. Seaforth's high school warC saved from the chopping block last spring by a civil suit won by a group of Seaforth residents who were able to convince a judicial tribunal that the Avon Maitland District School Board had been unfair to the community during its closure process. While the school could be listed again this November as a school to be studied for closure during the board's annual accommodation review process, Reaburn says the upcoming municipal election this fall could be a determining factor in the school's future. "It largely depends on the will of the new trustees," he says, adding that Seaforth residents may run for school board trustee anywhere in the district, not just the ward_in which they live. "Of course, it may be difficult to get elected (in areas other than where they live)," he says. ' Before pursuing ideas to increase enrolment such as creating an agricultural school at SDHS, Reaburn says he wants to get feedback from the school council, parents and the community about what they want at the high school. Last year, school council president Maureen Agar and former vice principal Rob Parr began researching the possiblility of offering agricultural courses at SDHS in partnership with the University of Guelph to attract students from outside the district who want to specialize in agriculture and veterinary science in post secondary school education. "I'm not sure where we stand on that yet," says Reaburn. Another idea he wants to research is offering an "advance placement" or "international baccaleureate" program, which would offer enriched curriculum that could gain students automatic placement into university courses. SDHS principal He says offering more challenging curriculum could draw students from outside the district since similar programs are not offered locally and mostly exist in the United States and at international schools. "It's an idea we were looking into at Central Huron when we were on the list (for possible closure). Once we were in the clear, it didn't seem to be something to pursue (at Central Huron)," says Reaburn. Distance education or the board's "virtual high school" is helping to expand the Students don't plan to protest From Page 1 workload. "At present there are no coaches for any teams. The students don't like it but they're hopeful it's a short-term problem," he says. SDHS student council co -president Jen DelVecchio says students' council is the only extra- curricular group operating at the school since their staff advisor is the principal, who is not a member of the teachers' union. While a Grade 9 welcome day will be held Sept. 20, the first dance of the year has been postponed indefinitely since no teachers are available to work as chaperones. "The teachers are upset about it too. They want to help the students - that's the fun part of their job. But, they can't perform their best as teachers or coaches if they don't have any prep time," says DelVecchio. Increased workloads under Bill 74 leave high school teachers with much less preparation time during the school day since they are expected to be in the classroom more often. DelVecchio says unlike students in the London area, Seafprth students are not planning any protests about the lack of extra -curricular activities. "It's a province -wide issue and I don't know how much that's (walking out of .class to protest is) accomplishing," she says. While stress levels among the SDHS teaching stall were very high during the school closure process last year, Reaburn says stress levels, while still high, have reduced a little this year. "There is generally a more positive outlook that the worst is over but the future is still uncertain. And, that's something that won't go away unless. the school population changes," he says. ' 's that high stress Iso being caused .)y the increased w..d imposed by Bill 74. 1 he province wants teachers to teach 1,250 minutes a week, which means all teachers will have a significantly reduced , if any, preparation time during the school day.
