Councillors question why
some stations will move
From Pope t
Coun, Jim Love. reeve of
Hay 7wp.: said it is "just not
feasible" to locate the
ambulance station at County
Rd. 83 and airport line.'•
"Why would you move an
ambulance -station two miles
down the road?.- from its
current location in
.Dashwood. questioned Love.
"Something has to shake
loose in the south. 1 will not
support any motion dealing
with that (the ambulance
location at County Rd;•83
and airport road) at all." said
Love.
As part of the debate two
other 'suggestions. which
were defeated. were. put
forward of what to do with
ambulance sites.
Coun. John.Doherty..reeve
of the Town of Godericli.
suggested county council
•cost - out locating the
Goderich ambulance station
at the hospital..
Coun. Lin Steffler. reeve
of the Town of Seaforth. also
put a recommendation on the
table that the
recommendation was
- incomplete and should..be
returned for further review.
She. said nothing . has

and ambulance stations are
still bottom heavy- in -the.
south end of the county.

no ambulance station east.of

"The county has a
responsibility to all residents
of the county to serve our
own residents," said Steffler.
Some councillors.felt the
economics of building. new
stations at probably three of
the 'four locations was of
concern. to them;
Coun. Harvey Ratz, reeve
of Stephen Twp. said it is
"not wise" to build four new
stations when they cost
approximately S300.000 to
S400.000 to build depending
on the size.
Coun. Rob Morley from
Usborne Twp. said' the.
Clinton and Seaforth stations
could both be kept open for
the cost it would be to build
a S300.000 building. They
could increase their coverage
area and both be run•by the
same manager.
• "Let's -learn how to run an
ambulance service first and
wait it out and see what
happens." said Morley.
Coun. Mason Bailey from
Blyth said he agreed with
Morley that the county, has
no realexpertise- or
knowledge of running an
ambulance service. He said
"I feel quite cortain the
consensus .with the public is
what's wrong with what we
have now?" He suggested
the next council coming in
may have more expertise in
the area and, they should
finish' up.
Obviously frustrated with
his fellow councillors and
their indecision Grey Twp.
reeve Robin Dunbar said
although it is rather.
"amusing" to watch. his
fellow councillors argue 100
yards here or there and felt
the four possible sites were
being "nit-picked."
• "We should get moving
and resolve this. We've been
working on it for a.number
of years, It's time for closure
on it," said Dunbar. "To
create change is to show
courage.'
Warden Carol Mitchell.
reeve of the Town of
Clinton, said it's'time a
decision was made on
ambulance services.
' She said the county
lobbied for a year and half
that they didn't want to take
over the downloaded
ambulance service.
"I don't think we can '
afford to not move ahead."
said Mitchell.
Huron is playing catch up
with the rest of the province
on restructuring and_now
ambulance service.
Other counties are not just
standing still. The county
still needs adequate service
of ambulances. said
Mitchell.
McBurney said the county
is "generally running like
hell to keep up." with
restructuring and ambulance
services.

Huron County Warden
Carol Mitchell, who brought
greetings on behalf of Huron
County Council, explained
that the _911 project "took
over five years to get to the
point where we are today."
The warden also said.
"Some thought .this event
would never take place, but
here we are."
She, too, passed on thanks
to all involved for helping to
ensure the county now has
the 911 service.
Thc official portion of the
function wrapped up when
Mitchell cranked out a 911
call on an antique phone. and
the call was answered by

vehicles, along with an old
