Dear Readers,
1
Thy work of the -community neulspaper is' in communication..
Communicating news and information to readers -every week is what we do.
And to do this, we depend :on good corimmunpcation with our readdrs, organiza-
tions and'community leaders. . •
• When communication breaks down. our role of keeping the community informed
becomes more 'difficult.
Often. newspaper staff are thlast people to hear criticisms or complliments about
-. the- work being done. . - `-1 •
. People. particularly those involved in the: community's leadership roles, tend to
discuss amongst themselves their•disappoiniments or praises for the newspaper. -
However. this only feeds misunderstanding of how or why coverage was or was-
n't provided. . - .
O • There is usually.a thought=outreastin for the way•a story was writien or for which
articles were written on a particular week and which issues have been set •aside.
But sometimes, when the material and issues being dealt with become over -
ver-'whclming. news or issues are overlooked. ' 1
'w helloing.
While it may be,a case that coverage.of an issue. has had to be put off to accom-
modate Other coverage. it could have been completely. but unintentionally. over-
looked.
Either way. ‘% hen people are concerned, they need to contact lig= editorial staff so
an -explanation can be provided or an 'oversight can be found and 'staff can we.irk
t n'. and providing the appropriate coverage.
All coverage is weighed against journalistic principles in which the editorial staff
is trained and experienced and.may not meet the expectations of a party of interest.
But staff will gladly help a re.ader understand how or why decisions were made.
Since there are many different ways an event or story can be handled, sometimes
those conversations can lead to improvements in coverage.••
When readers contact us. we appreciate their interest in working with us. even
if we aren't always able to work with the idea:or submission brought forward.
• How all submissions are treated is subject tothe editorial department's discretion.
The Huron Expositor attempts to maintain proper journalistic standards that some-
. times mean we cannot work with, or approach an idea a reader provides in.the way
that they hope.. Sometimes we won't be able to'use it at all. ' '
But when a reader takes time to contact .U.S, .we appreciate the fact they have
thought of us and don't wish to leave them disappointed:
More often than not. we can find a way to provide some form of coverage:
Always. we're glad to be.communicating with our readers: -
"Improving communication
to improve satisfaction. "
