on change to four years

Special to The Huron Expositor
Students from four secondary schools in
Huron and Perth Counties will take part in. a
province -wide, study into the --effects. of the
provincialgovernment's decision to move
from.a five-year.to four-year high school
curriculum.
•Ata regular meeting of the Huron -Perth
Catholic District School'.Board, Monday.
Aug. 28, trustees were informed of the study.
which will include students from St. Michael
Catholic Secondary School in Stratford. .
Also on •the list. inclutled•in a letter from
the province's education -ministry. are three
schoolsfrom the Avon Maitland District
School Board: (iuderich District High
.School. Mitchell District High School and
Stratford Central Secondary School.: , •
-
According to the letter: -a study will he
conducted of students currently entering
Grades 19 and II. These students have been
dubbed the "double cohort- because. tinder-
the
nderthe .schedule for curriculum changes, they
could all graduate from high school at the
same time- in June. 2093.. •
"It. would 'appear that --what (education
,ministry -.officials) are (Wing is trying to
figure out if the process they've put.in place
.10 try and help these students adapt is going
to make it hetter for students. ' said Ray
Contois: the Catholic hoard's superintendent
of education.
"And the only way they're going. to do that
is by following thein."
The study. to he conducted by researchers
from Queen's University in Kingston. would
take in about 83:000 students• out of a
possihle,306.000 in that age group across the
province. That means the list of participating
schools is quite long.
Students will he asked to fill out a
questionnaire each year. probably in October.
And they will also he studied •for a couple
- years after they _
leave secondary school. • -
Catholic trustee Louise Martin questioned
the wisdom of .such a study. suggesting
results won't he available until after. the
Students have already been forced to face the
realities of the double cohort. • •
"By then. they'll all he off at colleges or
universities or wherever." Martin said: • .
Contois admitted he knew little ahem the
ministry's intentions. beyond what was stated
in the recent letter.
