Volunteers important
part of Huron Hospice
as it provides caring help
By -Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
Being a volunteer with
Huron Hospice can make a
huge difference in a family's
life.
That's the experience local
volunteer Dick Burgess has
found since joining the
organization about two years
ago.
He has seen the help the
organization can give to a
family and to a person who
is dying.
"It allows the individual to
die as comfortably as
possible, spiritually and
emotionally, with as much
dignity as possible," said
Burgess.
Hospice offers volunteer
services to people who are
terminally ill that can be as
simple. as visiting with
someone who is dying to
providing some care for that
person to give family
members a help and a break
from the hard work of caring
for someone whose illness
requires 24-hour care.
"The comfort may be
sitting with someone playing
their favourite music, talking
to them or taking them, if
they are able to get around,
for a drive," said Burgess.
And he can speak with
hindsight as well of the
importance of the program
after being the sole caregiver
for his mother about 15
years ago when she was
diagnosed with cancer.
She had been diagnosed
with the disease in late
summer and within a few
months, could no longer get
around on her own before
having to be hospitalized.
"1 would have really
appreciated some support at
that time." said Burgess who
travelled to his mother's.
Tilbury home every day
after work to be with and
help her.
He said everyone who
comes to Hospice for help
has different needs adding,
they are not all efderly or
people with cancer, common
stereotypes for people with
terminal illnesses.
He also said there is a
particular shortage of male
volunteers which some male
clients would prefer when
seeking Hospice support.
Burgess said awareness of
Huron Hospice, which
serves clients in the
Seaforth. Clinton and
Goderich areas, continues to
grow.
For example, Burgess said
the organization's annual
celebrity fund raising golf
tournament, held this past
weekend at Seaforth Golf
acid Country Club, continues
to meet with success as
volunteers find people more
and more willing to sponsor
and donate prizes to the
event.
This year's event featured
local hockey talent including
NHL linesman Scott
Driscoll, Dan Wildfong and
former Detroit Tiger, Mike
(Killer) Kenny.
Burgess said there is still a
need for volunteers within
Huron Hospice. people how to provide care,
support and .comfort to
someone who is dying.
Huron Hospice can be
reached at 527-0655. The
offices . are located at
Seaforth Community
Hospital.
"It's a very challenging
and rewarding form of
volunteer service," said
Burgess.
