Composure during defeat
is sign, of a Massy golfer
A tough Sunday for
Canada's Lori Kane. • Going
to the final round of the
DuMaurier Classic in
Ottawa, tied for the lead. in
what was:reported to be the
final DuMaurier event on the
LPGA Tour, Lori was not
playing in front of the home
town, but the home country.
Things didn't go well for the
Prince Edward Island native,
who is one of the most
popularplayers on tour.
Lori's frustration was
evident as she started to run
out of real estate and others
passed her on their own path
to -the podium. Final camera
shots zoomed onto Lori's
face as she walked up the
18th fairway.
The normally spontaneous
• -and brilliant smile seemed a
little forced and misty eyes
• clearly showed Lori's
disappointment. The degree
of difficulty in keeping one's
composure under those
circumstances is only really
understood by those who
have walked the same path.
Believe me, most of Lori's
peers as well as professional
golfers everywhere could
empathize with 'Lori . on
Sunday.
Watching Lori and the
classy way she kept her
composure. held her head
high and took •defeat in her
stride, prompted me to write
a bit about the qualities of a
good player.
1 often .explain to young
golfers and beginning players
that a good player is onewho
can be just as pleasant to
play with when the chips are
-down. as they are when
things; are going their way. I
have played many a round of
'golf with people who are
extremely congenial and easy .
to get along with while they.
make pars and birdies. •
However, when a double
bogey strikes. of a ball flies
out of bounds or under a tree
into unplayable lie. ther
personality seems to take a
turn for the worse.
Some pout and refuse to
talk. making for a long and
quiet round. Others curse.
swear. moan and groan:

their golf bags. and even
break the "offending" golf.
clubs. Then there are
quitters, who stomp off. the
course in disgust as soon as
they're enroute to' posting
"their worst round ever."
I tell golfers that regardless
of how they feel about that-
particular round. how badly
they are hitting the ball. or
how embarassed they maybe.
at the time, no one will ever
really remember what they
shot.
Golfersremember records
under par not over par.
Players may not remember
what you shot—but they will
remember if you quit. They
may not remember what you
shot, but they'll remember if
you cheat. They may .not
remember- what you shot, but
they'll remember if you act
like a jerk.
There are many
competitive golfers who have
called penalties on
themselves knowing full -
well that not a single other
person in the world would
have known that a penalty
shot was incurred. Yet for
these players. the real score,
not just a score, is what
matters. For them. there
