Stanley girl donates hair to Wigs for Kids

An Egmondville boy's gesture from the hean has inspired
another area youngster to cut off 11 inches of her hair to he
donated for a wig for a child with cancer.
In lune. Bernie Kaufman. who was known for his unusually
k'ng locks, decided to shave his head during a Huron OPP
Cops for Cancer fund raising event.
Kaufman shaved his head to raise about 5500 toward cancer
research and to have the hair made available to be turned into
a wig.
Now. Ashley Harburn. daughter of Laverne (Butch) and
Elaine in Stanley Township. has cut off 11 inches of her hair
for the cause.
Elaine picked up on Ashley's interest and called the
Canadian Cancer Society in London to find out what program
accepted hair and where the hair should be sent. She also saw
a television program about it. She discovered the only criteria
were that the hair must be more than eight inches in length.
that it must be bound together with elastics and shipped in a
padded envelope to Wigs for Kids in St. Catharines.
"There's no sense in throwing it in the garbage when there's
kids who need it." said Elaine proudly.
Carlo Turavani. a Certified Cosmetic Therapist representing
the Canadian chapter of Wigs for Kids. says children
experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy.
alopecia or hums can have their hair replaced by cosmetic
therapists. Wigs for Kids has a mission to help children look .
themselves. .
"I can tell you from personal experience. there is no greater
reward than being able to relieve some of the emotional
suffering these kids face during this life-threatening Ordeal. -
said Turavani in a press release.
Alf Ross scores hole -in -one last week
Ace! The "Hole -in -One" is
one of the most elusive of
golf's accomplishments.
There are golfers who have
scored several aces during
their golfing years and others
who play round after round.
year after year, eventually
retiring their clubs without
ever experiencing the
excitement of scoring an ace.
There is an element of luck
that must combine in a
unique fashion to allow the
golfer to accomplish this
feat. Some players will hit
the .most beautiful of shots
that seem destined to go in
the hole. Others will hit an
ugly shot that bounces and
careens down the fairway
finally ending up at the
bottom of the cup. In either
case cheers abound. The "1"
will be circled on the
scoreboard and the card will
be treasured for years to
come.
Some golf courses are
more suited to this hole -in -
one experience. Par threes
are by far the easiest places
t get an ace. so a course
with more par threes or very
short par fours will surely
welcome the highest number
of aces.
Our local course has five
par threes as well as a couple
of short par fours.
The first person to enjoy a
hole in one at Seaforth Golf
Club was Bill MacLean w o
aced the short par three 1 h
hole. although it was the fifth
hole at the time Bill made the
ace. Bill was a junior golfer
at the time and has gone on
to play a lot of good golf
over the years.
The youngest player to
score an ace at our course
was Curtis Bennett who aced
the 10th hole a couple of
years ago at the age of nine.
. Curtis is the son of Kevin
Bennett, a former Seaforth
Golf Club "ankle biter" and
the nephew of Steve Bennett,
head pro at Sarnia Golf and
Curling Club. and former
teacher of Mike Weir,
Canada's premier
professional touring pro. One
of the neat things about this
is that Curtis would not he
considered old enough to
.golf. at many arca :golf
courses. -
Randy Wilson made
headlines around the golfing
world when she aced the
10th hole at Seaforth several
summers ago. What was so
unusual about this young
lady's accomplishment was
that it was the first shot of the
first round of her life! The
•fact that she was allowed to
tee off on the 10th hole first
because the front nine was
too crowded. contributed
greatly to the story.
Randy and her mother
knew so little about golf that
they really had no idea what
an accomplishment it was.
Ken Doig Sr. who has
played countless rounds of
golf during his lengthy and
successful amateur career did
not score his first hole in one
until he was 67 years old. '
Unfortunately. his eyes were
so bad by then that he didn't
even see it go in the hole.
The most recent hole in
one at our course was scored
on Wednesday when Alf
Ross. a long time member.
aced the difficult 13th .hole
with a five wood. Alf and his
playing partner didn't see the
ball go into the hole and both
thought it had gone over the
back of the green. After
several minutes of searching.
they looked into the cup as a
last resort. and there was that
little white sphere staring
back at them. To say that Alf
was excited would be an
understatement.
Traditionally the golfer •
scoring the hole in one buys
a round for the house. Hole
in One insurance is available
and some clubs offer special
hole in one pools that allow
golfers some financial
assistance when the big day
arrives. Hole in one
insurance is quite popular in
Japan where an ace can be

Keep playing. Your day
will come.
