Tuckersmith to study liquid manilre controls
By Susan Hundsrtmork

An interim by-law restricting livestock opeyations with
.more than 200 animals involving liquid manure is being
'considered by Tuckersmith Township council.
Reeve Bob Broadfoot says Tuckersmith council will
probably vote on the interim control by-law at its meeting on
Sept. 5 and has had two lengthy debates on the issue over the
summer.
'Water quality is a major concern and we're discussing it.
We don't have a problem in Tuckersmith we're aware of but
since Walkerton everybody is very touchy about water quality.
as they should he, and we're trying to be cautious.' says
Broadfoot.
During the Walkerton tragedy this spring, E -coli bacteria in
the drinking water was linked to six deaths and. 1:000 people
sick. some of them hospitalized.
Because two members of Tuckersmith council have had
azience with liquid manure operations. Broadfoot says
cavil is also wanting to be supportive of farmers.
"Agriculture is very important to Tuckersmith and we have
to support it but since the Walkerton situation, we have to be
keenly aware of water.quity. We don't want anyone getting.
sick." he says.
Since Tuckersmith Township water drains more into sink
holes than rivers and streams. Broadfoot says he's not sure
how large liquid manure operations would affect water quality
in the township.
"There is nothing in our by-laws to protect sink holes." he
says. .adding that sink holes are areas were water collects on
the ground and filters down into aquifers. underground
sources of water that can housed by wells.
The interim by-law would be in place for a year while
Tuckersmith Township reviews its nutrient by-law. .
"The by-law would put on a freeze until we can do our
homework.. We want to review o.ur nutrient .by-Iaw.hut we
don't know yet if there's anything wrong with it." he says.. •
