Council
sending
$1,000
to
Walkerton
Seaforth council will be
sending $1,000 to
Walkerton to help with its
need for safe water to
drink,
"They're still not going
to be over this crisis. It
wouldn't hurt to do
something. It could be us
who needs help down the
road," said Reeve Lin
Steffler.
Council had put off
making a decision at a
June 13 meeting, wanting
to see what kind of help
the provincial government
was going to provide.
Council wasn't sure any
help was coming and at its
June 27 meeting, opened
the issue for discussion.
Coun. Michael Hak
suggested it might be
better to find a way to
send a truck load of water
to them rather than an
originally suggested $500
donation because that
wouldn't buy enough
water.
• Administraor Jack
McLachlan said if the
government declares the
area a disaster area. it
matches, three -to -one, the
money donated to the
community.
In relation to whether or
not the area should be
consider a disaster area,
Coun. Heather Robinet
pointed out. "It.'s the
worse, outbreak in
Canadian history. It's a'
landmark." ..
"There's a very real
need out there," said
Steffler, who made a
motion council send
$1,000.
The motion was carried
with no further discussidn.
"That was easy," said
Mayor Dave Scott.

Health unit
has workshop
for well owners
The Huron County Health
Unit is hosting a workshop;
for small communal well
owners and operators on July
12.
Wells with more than two
households on one water
supply are classified as a
communal well. During the
past month, we have learned
from the Walkerton water
contamination situation that
we need to protect our ground
water and that we should not
take the quality of our water-
for
aterfor granted.
Owners and operators of
small communal wells in
Huron County are urged to
attend the free workshop on
July 12 from 7 p.m. to 10
p.m. at the Clinton Town Hall
Auditorium. Experts from the
Huron County Health Unit
will review the construction
of wells, sampling
procedures, interpretation of
water sample results, and
how to treat your small
communal well if there is a
bacteria count in your
sample.

Board .not funding any groups
By Susan Hundertmark

No outside groups will be .
receiving funding (ran the
Avon Maitland District
School Board this year. said
superintendent Geoff
Williams atlast week's board
meeting.
Because a board -policy
created lust year gives
administration the power to
determine which, if anyi
groups are funded by the
board, the issue was not
discussed "or. decided by
trustees.
However, trustee Abby
Armstrong asked. Williams
where the $65,000 given last
year to outside groups will he
spent.
"Thc intent this year is 1O'
redirect• the money • into
primary language resource
progams in schools," said
Williams. adding .that the
money will purchase reading
materials for primary
students and train teachers
how to use them.
The issue created
controversy Tat• year when
groups • that hada been
historically funded for ,years
by both predecessor boards.
in Huron and Perth Counties,
such .as the, Seaforth District
High School All 'Girls
Marching Band; were
informed the funding would
end.
While the total budget for
outside groups was reduced
to $65,000 from . the
$106,395 to Penh groups and
$59,124 to Huron groups,
_many groups retained some
funding last 'year• after
following another new
policy, also put in place •last
year, that required groups to
apply for funding each year.
Williams refused to release
the list of groups which
received funding last year
until the groups receive a'.
letter from the board.

Williams said because the
board no longer has the
ability to control its revenue'
by raising taxes. funding
outside groups is a "luxury
the board has ceased to be

"We've got to focus all our
resources on program
