Despite rain, Moe Norman
impresses golfing patrons
Last Sunday we were
geared up once again to host
the legendary "Pipeline"
Moe Norman. After missing
I.ast year's outing due to
illness. it had taken quite a
few phone calls to reschedule
Moe for the benefit of
patrons who had forked out
the fee in 1999 to play in the
Hospice Celebrity Event and
see Moe in action.
Once the new date was
established all the patrons
were notified and we hoped
that as many as possible
could return.
The day finally arrived
and. as usual. the weather
was terrible. We were unsure
what would happen. Would
the patrons return'' Would
Moe show? By 10 that
morning we didn't have to
worry about no spectators.
One golfer drove in from
Bracebridge. other groups
came from Kincardine,
London. Wingham and
beyond and one fellow who
travelled here from Boston
last summer. returned to see
Moe.
By 12:55 p.m. Cam and I
were getting a bit nervous.
We had a reserved parking
spot for Moe but there was
no Moe and the skies were
looking pretty grim. People
were asking if he would
show. We just nodded and
hoped.
Right on 1 p.m. someone
came .in and said that Moe
had just pulled in. Doug Fry
had escorted Moe here from
the local service station
where he had stopped to ask
directions to the course. I
guess it's been awhile since
By Carolanne Doig
he was here and wasn't sure
how best to get here.
When Cam asked what he
needed at the range, Moe
replied. "One hundred and
sixty-two balls to warm up
and 162 balls to hit after
that."
Notice that it wasn't 150 or
. around 160. It was 162.
Moe asked the relatively
small group to come down
from the stands and group
around him more closely It
was like having your own
private viewing. Moe was
close and you could hear him
quite well.
I was very surprised at
how much dialogue there
was. Moe talked to the group
about the mental side of the
game, the most important
side, in his opinion, and he
talked about the need to keep
golf simple.
When asked when he last
hit a ball out ofbounds, he
replied, "1979."
He said he'd been using
the same tee for seven years.
He never wears a glove.
He sets the club -face up
about eight inches behind the
ball.
He can rattle off his course
records and wins.
One comment he made
that we all loved was,
"How's it over there in the
trees Jack?" How's it in the
other trees, Freddie? It's nice
and balmy here in the
middle."
Of course, as luck would
have it, the heavens opened
up and we all got soaked to
the skin. Not one person left
the clinic and Moe continued
to hit balls until the water
was literally running down
his face. hands, neck and
back. Finally with Cam's
suggestion, he called it quits
after hitting balls for about
an hour.
Moe headed for home
leaving a group of very wet,
very impressed golfers in
Seaforth.
